Does anyone have experience with the red LED standby light dimming? The standby light is much dimmer on my RW-H500 than my other components. Is this as easy as swapping the LED out?

Hey all, I got myself a Teac AH500i from ebay for just over £100. As soon as the amp has been on for about half an hour the right channel starts emitting an ocean like sound which slowly gets progressively louder over time. This happens on every channel apart from CD if the direct button is engaged. I have had it serviced and she replaced a transistor and thought she'd fixed the issue but I've got it home and it's still doing it.

Does anyone have any advice, is this a common issue? Any help would be much appreciated. I've now put £160 into this amp so kinda hoping I can come out the other side under £200. Would be great to go back to her with some info from people who may have run across this before.

Happy new year all. Dave

Those sort of intermittent issues can be a chore to track down. If the amp makes the noise and you shut it off for five minutes, how long before it starts making the noise again? A half hour again or does it occur more quickly? If it is temperature related you can use a hair dryer to safely warm up parts of the circuitry and see if that make the noise appear. Heat related issues can be caused by cold solder joints or faulty components. If your tech can get the noise to appear, a can of freeze spray can help find bad components or at least narrow down the area by chilling down parts and causing the noise to stop. I would reflow most of the solder joints and look for bad capacitors as they are usually the first things to go in older electronics. The amp should be tested under load for at least a couple of hours. A resistive load can do the trick without having to put up with loud music or test tones. Then check the amp when it is running warm, or run a sine wave through the amp and use an oscilloscope to monitor the output for noise.

If the noise is not present or goes away with CD direct, then that eliminates the amplifier stage as he problem and indicates an issue in the pre-amplifier stage or tone controls. The service manual is on HiFi Engine if she has an account there (they are not currently accepting new registrations).
