I would really recomend not using a car subwoofer on a home audio system. Car subs are generally designed for smaller enclosures so in a home they are tuned differently and sound boomy. If your using it primarly for music then it might be alright however if your wanting a good sub for movies a car sub would not be the answer. Home audio subs are also designed to have more extension then car subs, for instance when my friends equitment was over here we tested my sub going down to 19hz flat, where as those mxt subs are only rated at 29hz. Heres a good thread discussion on this issue. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=613768&highlight=car+sub

Im also curious on how a sub that is rated at 29hz goes down to 16hz in a larger space then it was designed for. I think you did it wrong because I used two 12" Kappa Perfects in my winISD and they only go down to 24hz at -3db, and the Kappa Perfects are better then those mxt drivers

Can you please define extention? Are you speaking of the FS, xmax or driver performance on the whole? Car audio drivers sound boomy? It would seem to me that you haven't built many loudspeakers, and you are making statements from bad literature, not from experience.

Loudspeakers, no your right I havent built many loudspeakers, however since were talking about subwoofers then the answer is yes I have built several. One of them using using a Infinity Kappa perfect and I speak from experience in that it is much more difficult to make it reach the low hz and hit as clean as subs intended for home audio. Now, I was simply trying to point out that your probobly entered your information in wrong on winISD since your two MXTsubs that are rated at 29hz are going down to 16hz. Instead of getting offended next time why don't you take a breath and think before you say something else that makes me and my freinds make fun of you for taking home audio WAY WAY too seriously.

I think a big part of the lack of extension in car audio drivers is the severe limit on enclosure volume. You can do a lot with a driver's extension by increasing the size of the enclosure.

So, I entered the data wrong in win ISD, then I built the cabinet wrong in my shop, then I must have measured it wrong, and finally I must be deaf? Ok. I would be happy to e-mail you the WinISD file if you wish.

You obviously don't know much physics. I do take audio pretty seriously, when you have spent as much time and money as I have, it tends to get a little serious. So go ahead and make fun of me, you’re the one with such a manly screen name.

Sheep,
the proper term is "gear down there big shifter", and I am really being nice here, I'm trying to turn over a new leaf!

I haven't threatened to hurt anyone yet, isn't that a plus?

Hey Mac,

Any Pictures of the sub?
I had some posted here, but I really can't find them. I will look around and see what I can find. Had a good pic of when I was building it, my 8yr old son was sitting in it. The unit is quite large, and it took a lot of bracing in the structure, but the results were very good. The port is HUGE! something like 11X7 X 25" long. I have been working on some new designs, but of all of the woofers I have modeled, those MTX seem to work out the best.

Hey, I just noticed you are in Pittsburgh, wish I would have known that when we went to SVS, you could have come with. Here we go Steelers, Here we go!...... I think we got it this year

I would have liked to stop by SVS. i read the review of your visit and was a little jealous! I moved to Pitt a few years ago but I was born and raised in Cleveland. It makes for fun holidays at my fiances parents house!!! I still have season tickets to the Browns...Good thing I didnt drive up for the nail biter that was Christmas Eve. The Browns looked pretty good for a High School team! I hope the "Stillers" make it to the post season...shame they were plagued with soooo many injuries to follow last year. they are a better team than their record shows.

Wow, from cleveland??? I am from youngstown, I grew up a huge Browns fan, then they left and I was soo upset. My entire family was steelers fans so they got me to convert. I haven't looked back since. BTW, I'm not sure the browns could beat St. Xavier this year!

Sorry to hear you converted...Browns need all the help they can get! It hasnt been the same since they left. I got season tickes with my father when they reformed but I rarely go to games anymore. We donated the second half of the season for a tax write off. GOOD THING...we couldnt pay someone to take them now:( That was a real disapointment (as usual) with the Steelers last week. thought they could at least show up to play. Gave Cinci a run for their money...

They could hold their own against St. Xavier agaist JV. they would get blown out in the Mens league though!

Your not Kidding...I remember the last play for Bernie. After the game they said the called play from Belickick was supposed to be a run (Metcalf up the middle I presume) but Bernie drew some patterns in the sand (so to speak) and ended up with a Bomb to__________? (cant remember...langhorn?) if only Bill could play well with others and let Bernie have some input they might have made something of the team.

The two shooters at the grassy knoll side of me thinks Model had Bellychick sabatoge the team to make for an easier move...Who knows! Its a shame...Browns Steelers WAS one of the greatest sports rivalries. Now its almost another given Sunday!:( People pretend its still "The Great Rivalry" but its not just the same.

BTW, I looked for a posting of Pics for your sub and couldnt find it. The search through your name let me view the last 500 posts. I purused them and couldnt find any pics of the Sub. Some pics were deleted from one post showing your remodeling but I dont think the Sub was included.

All true. I remember it like it was yesterday.

Ok, back to subwoofers 101.

Mac,

I have to agree with you. Just because a woofer is a car woofer does not mean it will be boomy. In fact, there are many car subs that put home subs to shame in the motor linearity and suspension linearity departments. The best thing to do is do your reasearch on a given woofer.

The one downside I have found for using car woofers is sensitivity (in some cases) and LARGE enclosures to acheive deep response. The enclosure issue is mostly due to one using it for a purpose other than it's original intention. :)

100% true. Every word. The sensitivity is an issue, as is the Z in some cases. I just end up compensating for it by crossover design (in passive units) or putting a heck of an amp behind it.
