Subwoofer advice

How big is the TOTAL ROOM VOLUME that the subwoofer is in? (Not just a listening corner of a Great Room, but the whole space it is exposed to, please.)

14 ft wide 21 feet long 7 foot ceiling

Just depends how much you want to spend I DIY my subs these days. Not that I don't particularly like M&K, but no personal experience either; they get good reports but the new owners of the brand aren't quite like the original guys either. It looks to be a decent sub, seems there's both a mk 1 and mk 2 model, too but not sure of the difference, not a lot of details available out there, altho there's this https://www.soundandvision.com/content/mk-s-150p-thx-speaker-mx-350-thx-subwoofer-page-2 . If you want to see a modern take on that design you might check out the Arendal sub that has been reviewed here recently.

What would I need to spend to get a solid diy sub that will be awsome for music and movies

The better economy is generally using a pair of subs with an amp that can handle both. Do you have the wood working capabilities for construction? Finishing skills sufficient to live with in your house? Lots of good designs for you to review out there in various diy fora (here, avsforum, diyaudio, etc). I like Stereo Integrity drivers myself....

If you can demo both (assuming they're well setup) maybe that's a good first step? There are some flatpacks for sub boxes out there for particular drivers that are fairly simple to assemble, diysoundgroup and GSG Audio design offerings come to mind there....but you'll still need to finish them after that.

That's a fairly good sized room. I'd recommend 2 subs. $400 for the NSD is pushing it a tad, but I agree with HD in that if it's well taken care of not a terrible price. It would probably work pretty well with the PC model also.

That said for not much more you can get a new PB1000 pro, tho I'd recommend at least 2 of them for your room size.

Where are you located?

I don't know about stock levels/availability, but new Hsu VTF-2 or VTF 3s woud be a very serious consideration. They offer a discount if buying 2 (Dual Drive package).

Your room is only just over 2000cu.ft. Though the dimensions (if correct) are exact multiples of each other. That could be interesting.
Regardless, you don't need MASSIVE Woffage to take care of that space, just appropriate Woofage.

Go with 2 of whatever brand/model you choose. You won't regret it. I went with 2 SB4000s.

Depends what frequency range you mean by hit in the chest, as often those frequencies aren't particularly in the sub's range and are more spl related.....

Not quite, but the problem is the budget. Both the PB and PC will perform the same, and either will easily outperform the b and w on movies, and music. Despite that, if the room is on concrete, you won’t get much couch shaking, although you might get some midbass punch from maybe 35-100hz.
The Nsd series was a really good budget line, but there was and are better choices.
So, while either will be an upgrade, and yes you’ll definitely notice a difference(don’t know if blown away is the right description since I don’t really know your expectations and experience level).
