Speaker guidance for HT

I'm a little confused by this statement - "You would be surprised at how many "non-audiophiles" instinctively sense that their system is somehow short-changing them on music." Do you mean guys who think they know more than they do, believe their system isn't very good for music?

The thought I hoped to convey was that while people initially downplay the importance of music in their HT systems, they often regret it in the long run. It doesn't take much to get a jaw-dropping response to a movie soundtrack. A good sub and sizzling highs will do that for most people. Music takes a bit more finesse.

i.e. One don't have to be an "audiophile" to realize they made a mistake by not taking music into consideraton when purchasing their system.

But, YMMV

Thanks for the clarification and the advice. I'll be sure to try and get both video and music when I listen to some systems. I do want to have CD's and MP3's sound as good as movie soundtracks, but just figured if it was good enough for me as an HT set-up, I'd be okay otherwise.
The big box stores just aren't real conducive to this type of thing (auditioning) as there always seems to be something blaring in the background.
I may not be able to tell much of a difference anyway. Maybe I need my son to come along with me.

Droff, as you can tell, the Def Techs are excellent quality speakers. The one issue is that they cost 1.5-2 times what you’ll spend for an ID speaker of similar quality/performance. Also, while the ProSub 800 is an excellent little performer, it doesn’t provide the impact of a similar priced SVS or HSU sub. To keep you on budget, my preference for speakers in this order would be: AV123 X-series, SVS SBS, Athenas, and HSU. Then add the budget appropriate sub from SVS or HSU.

Be sure to check out the B-stock and display models of the above companies to stretch your dollar and if you aren't opposed to buying used Audiogon.com is a great place to find deals.

I listened to some B&W speakers today, DM600S3 for left and right and LCR60 for the center. The sub was a Velodyne SPL10 and all were ran through a Marantz SR5001 receiver. Sounded good, from metal rock to James Taylor to 'Gladiator'. Honestly I couldn't tell much difference between these and the Def Techs. The set up runs $2200, which is REALLY over my budget, but the closest he had to my price range. $1500 for speakers, $700 for receiver.
Anyone have any input on the similarities to AV123 x-series speakers?
