Here’s my own little home cinema soon to be upgrade via some possibly new and affordable Behringer A500 amplifiers that a mate just showed me, who lives in the USA Texas.

Thou it may look small the SONY TV monitor it’s not a bad performer for her age. I’m more crazy for the sound but you need a big image and that can only be accomplished via a video projector which I don’t have at the moment.

But as far as the sound goes in the room it’s just wow, sure beats what I have felt at the local cinemas in my home town, but it would never equal the Empire Leicester Square screen #1, it might come close but it’s still a few light-years behind.

The Kenwood KRF-9050D THX select AVR is mostly the heart of all the Dolby Stereo Dolby Digital 5.1 and dts 5.1 decoding, with Lucasfilm THX electronic circuitry to re-EQ the fronts surrounds and a whole lot more, some of which most would now understand.

All the RCA pre-outputs from the Kenwood KRF-X9050D THX select, goes to different parts of audio electronics for special audio processing, that makes this home cinema, well not to special, but it’s all in the mix I say, and with very carefully listening I can take the fronts one step further with very little cost!

The Yamaha DSR-70Pro is a Dolby Surround Pro-Logic matrix processor, which I have adapted for use of the front left and right, that means the left and right outputs from the Kenwood, goes into the DSR-70Pro, and then output to the Ferguson Videostar, Hi-Fi VCR, which has an onboard audio limiter, now like I explained with the first audio limiter the Panasonic, which is used for the centre channel, well the Ferguson, just simply does the left and right stereo.

With all levels set to (0db) on the Kenwood, and via running it at 0db reference level, and via setting the volume on the amplifies and very careful adjustment of the EQ’s, where I aim for an optimum peak level of 85dbA in the centre of the room, not all films tend to peak at 85dbA which is around the mid high to high frequency range!

But sometimes it does peak slightly over at around 88dbA this is acceptable seeing it it’s only for about 1 second, if the levels should exceed this for more than a few seconds, and the sound of the high frequencies becomes too much for taking, then I will make the necessary modifications to the sound system, so far it’s been running like a treat!

Realistic audio mixer, this is used to control all the sub bass lows from the main fronts, centre, split-surrounds, and the LFE.1 separately, each one is assigned to an individual line in input on the mixing consol, and is panned and the fader level is adjusted to make sure the signal never goes over the 0db reference level.

This as preformed very well over the last few years, and I have done some rather interesting testing of the LFE.1 signal only, to see which film on DVD as the overall highest LFE.1 signal, more to come on this later.

Yamaha DSP-100 processing the centre channel, via RCA phone from Kenwood

Marantz 1050’s stereo amplifiers, fronts left and right, centre and upper centre
Marantz 1030 stereo amplifier side surrounds

2WEX electronic active X-over centre channel, this helps to give a more powerful centre channel, not just for dialogue, but for sound effects and music.

Plus an array of EQ’s for room correction, these are used for fronts sub bass and the split-surrounds array. Mostly made up of Technics Marantz and Genexxa and a JVC which is pictured to the in the other photos.

JBL control 5’s three-screen across the fronts, with two extra JBL control 5’s to be latter installed for screen channels 2 & 4 left centre, right centre this September 2006.

JBL MR centre, this is placed 7 feet above, this generates wonderful placement of phantom centre imaged sounds from the left and right, to this loudspeaker, and performs very well indeed.

JBL 4645 18” professional THX approved cinema sub bass, with a newer JBL 224H, this generates lows that are more cinema exact sounding, with deep abyssal low end of unrelenting pressure, slam kick rumble pounding shaking, is played flawlessly, with 115dbc! It can go to 120dbc if I was so inclined to do so!

JBL control 1’s multi-array summer project! I have started the summer of with a brand new array of JBL control 1’s, the plan is to install x16 JBL control ‘s over the summer season, at the present moment I’m running x6 JBL control ‘s x2 on each sidewall and x2 on the back wall, or rather the door.

With just x10 more to be installed the sound at present is awesome, truly awesome!

Pioneer CLD-1750 Laserdisc player this is the main laserdisc player that I use for playing laserdisc films back at the moment.

Pioneer CLD-2950 Laserdisc player this player is currently turned off, as I need a few basic parts to install on it, other than that she’s ok.

Pioneer DV-525 DVD region 2 this is the main DVD player that I use most of the time for DVD film playback.

SONY DVP-S336 DVD region 2 this is my second DVD player, I use this most times.

Cello DR-810 DVD-RW this is a DVD recorder, I brought this because I was frustrated with the poor Star Trek the motion picture on DVD with poor sound and poor editing, so I transferred Star Trek the motion picture from widescreen laserdisc 2.35:1 scope, to DVD-RW, now I have watched the original more times over the awful directors edition!

Furguson Hi-FI VHS PAL this rarely gets used now, as I’m slowly transferring some of the films from VHS PAL to DVD-RW, as I’m still waiting for Poltergeist to arrive on region 2 DVD UK.

For video monitoring I’m running the SONY KX-21 PS1

Continued A film for every mood

Hear is another set of JBL control 1 images, looks like the “summertime JBL control1 surround project array” is right on schedule.

This wider angle shot taken as far back the home cinema as possible, shows the placement of the JBL control 1’s placed on the right side and the back wall.

This is a rather tight angle image showing the back surrounds and the height surrounds.

Thank you

Well I would have to place the DVD titles somewhere else in the future as it’s starting to really take that bookshelf up now, the kitchen might be a neat place for secondary storage as I really don’t want to add another bookshelf in the room there’s one where to place one without creating sound issue problems.

LOL well the Christmas tree has just gone up which adds a few more wires. Least it’s colourful and it only happens once a year and then it’s gone faded into time and history…

Christmas decorations

In the last 40 minutes

I’ve added a blue neon light 12volt run, these types are used for cars and can make a great enchainment to the home cinema with an array of three primary colours going around the room maybe a fourth a yellow neon light. Hiding the light from being in your face is the art I have a few ideas but so far I only have one neon light.

There were plans to install 18 neon lights around the room placed above with a covering around it, so the only thing you’ll see is the colour bouncing or reflecting off the ceiling creating this wonderful colour kinder like the Empire cinema.

”Impulse power restored.”

“Excellent! More than a match for poor Enterprise.”

Well, well - so Dolby, tired of things over at the S&V forums? ;) I will say that several of those pictures certainly get lots of use... hadn't seen the Control 1 array pix though...

Get ready turkeys! I’m going to be doing some major makeover with the amplifiers starting in the New Year with Behringer A 500 and it’s going to be a huge array for the home cinema alone!

£118.99 UK at Turnkey!:p

…Inspired by the newly refitted Empire Leicester square which underwent a new makeover this summertime with a brand new THX specification, and with the technologies now on hand at some remarkable low prices at Turnkey, the time now seams right for me to make the next step a reality.

I have plans to install x8 Behringer A 500 over the New Year and finally replace my ole Marantz 1050 and 1030 where they have served a great purpose over the last 17 years and I feel that change is now in order to keep up with the times.

The plan is to go with a multiple configuration design of x8 A 500 Behringer.

x1 Left and Right Stereo
x2 Left centre Right centre Stereo
x3 Centre, Upper Centre
x4 Left side surround right side surround arrays
x5 Centre back surround array
x6 Height surround array
x7 Sub bass extension
x8 Sub bass LFE.1

Design is pending slight changes if costs change on the A 500 Behringer. but I’ll do my best to keep to the specification.

At £118.99 per amplifier it’s a rather tempting offer.

"No, No you can’t possibly use x16 JBL control 1's for the surrounds!"

I’m getting that buzzing loving feeling whoa yeah bring it on! Thou the summertime JBL control 1 project was more a less on schedule and thou I pursed the project until I finally complete the surround array off with a further x8 more JBL control 1 which should give me an Empire Leicester square rocking feeling.

The THX baffle wall is one part of it that makes it all come together and work as a whole, this will be one of the other projects that would get fitted somewhere between all this. The materials for this are quite affordable and will give a more solid front sound stage then the sub stranded conventional ones where loudspeakers are just stuck up in front of the room with that hash sound!

"This home JBL THX cinema is now the ultimate power in the neighbourhood, I suggest I use it!" :D

Seriously, I have no life.
Your only problem now with that huge sound-system is that microdot of an image:D
Or, did I miss that 100: projection system?

I would use an EP2500 for your subwoofer. More power.

With 1 of the 3 ports plugged, what is it tuned to?

The more I think about it, the more I think that there is nothing small about that sound system.

JBL home cinema installation Wintertime project

emorphien

Well it’s about to get a whole lot little bigger tonight starting of with the height surround array!

The JBL Control 1 wintertime surround array project 2 2007!

Well I’ve decided too start early with the surround rather than doing this in the summertime so here it goes for tonight’s project if I can get these two installed for the height surround array which will consist of x10 JBL Control 1 with x4 for each section of the ceiling and finally ending up with just x2 towards the front.

I’ll start of with wall plugging the ceiling and hope they stay up LOL, as it would be quite a bump on the head!

So far the array of just x8 is warm sounding and changes in the soundtrack on Apollo 13 where it cuts from mission control to the command module really changes the size of the surrounds it’s if the sound closes in all around me.

Again starting at just £49.98 for the JBL Control 1 this is one surround project that leaves my friends crawling in the dust!

I’ll replace the exciting height surrounds where there frequency response power handling is a little on the poor side. But they have severed very well since November 2005 where they was installed for Star Wars episode 3 Revenge of the Sith.

Well I have a new set now and by towards the end of the night I should have the height surrounds really starting to take there place wit some very cool sounding effects overhead!

I’ll start in a few hours from now.:)

The JBL Control 1 wintertime surround up and running!

Well firstly I measured the distance from the coving that goes around the sides of the ceiling from the inside. I have calculated around 26” from the edge of the coving to the first position of the JBL Control 1 height surround and 26” from the back wall this will hopeful place them in position where I can keep adding and adding on more until I reach the required number of x10 height surrounds.

I had to remove the existing height surround one by one.

The tools for the mission

I took the liberty to have a look inside the new JBL Control 1 has this does differ from the earlier models, it appears to be lighter in weight. So I hope it stays put!

I hate heights! What I mean is I’m not too comfortable with heights even at 2ft 2” off the floor I’m terrified. But just think what it’s going to sound like with a matching JBL Control1 surround array and with the heights the timbre matching of sounds will be awesome…

…I will have to patch up the ceiling due to some plaster braking away no big deal a tub of filler does amazing things these days. Cabling will be eventually tidied up with cable ducting fitted to the ceiling as well along the corners and down to each JBL Control 1 surround speaker.

Well here’s what I’ve been up to in the last 2 hours plus!

I had to remove the existing height surround one by one.

Then fit the mounting bracket to the ceiling with x4 screws that I hope bit into the wood that is behind it.

I must say it took 36 minutes alone to fit just x1 JBL Control to the ceiling, god I hope this holds, the site of it makes my skin crawl.

Anyway fitting it was scary for me as I hate heights, getting the (mould nut) was little orchard to attach due to the angle I was in. A small hole is fitted around the (mould nut) with where a pole can be fitted and thus turning it around to tighten it up is made easy.

Step by step I attached the parts to the JBL Control 1 for height surround installation.

Getting close and now wow, the sight of it make me feel dizzy when looking at the picture. Well I said I was going to install height surrounds via a matching array of JBL Control 1 and now that is a reality it’s possible and there it is.

Well I’ve have had a 30 minute break it’s back to work for the next JBL Control 1, which is going to present a tighter difficulty as you will see from the pictures in the next post in the next hour or so.

The JBL Control 1 wintertime surround array up and running!

Well so far so good, no awesome is the word and only x8 more JBL Control 1 for the height surrounds to go now.

All I have to do at present is re-calibrate the surrounds centre back sides and height surrounds. I’ll start off with the heights then move over to the centre back and then finally calibrate the sidewall surrounds

Superman Returns is totally surrounding me and this is just with the four-channel JBL surround array truly awesome, wow this like being at the Empire Leicester square really it’s just too damn exciting here.

With airplane sequence in chapters 10 though to 12 where wind and music and with Superman’s speed racing against incredible odds looking upwards and from side to side and back as well it was a mad scene that was delivered with precision.
