Silly ethernet cable question

I run a wired router to ps3,tv and computer.I had at one point ATT dsl..It was very slow compared to time warner cable which I recently switched to.I get twice the speed for 10.00 less a month and haven't had any log on issues like I did with ATT.Got tired of calling ATT customer service and being routed around for 20 minutes trying to solve the problem which they never did. They also have a problem with dropped signals on their mobile phones.See CNN technology.
By the way,my connection speed is 1642.5 kbs

Just for the record, I purchased a switch and it really sped up my PS3 on the internet side. My Internet in general is still pretty slow so and drops out a lot so I am going to go ahead and change to cable.
No drawbacks, take the ethernet cable coming out of the wall and connect it to the switch/hub then connect all your gear to the remaing ports on the switch/hub, it doesn't matter what ports you connect the devices to, they are all the same. I have a 4 port gigabit wireless N router in my bedroom, and two 8 port gigabit switches in other rooms and most of the ports are filled up and everything runs flawlessly.

Do an 'internet connection speed test'. Google that phrase and you'll see quite a few links. The uplink side is always lower for residential but your use will determine what you need, whether it's DSL or broadband from a cable provider.

What you should do - is call At&T and ask them with the plan you have, what are the speeds you should be seeing.... don't let them ask you what speeds you are getting first.... and to be honest, their lowest plan sucks balls, - their highest plan is pretty darn good if your close to a fiber optic line.... but I believe there is a middle ground plan...

Then after they tell you what speeds you are supposed to get with your plan compare those numbers to what you are truly getting....

Heres the thing, the internet and ISP's are running out of bandwidth until they get full coverage with Fiber Optic nation wide backbone setup, and I'm pretty confident that they put restrictions on lines that don't use alot of bandwidth on a normal basis, so they can dedicate that usage across the board - You won't really even notice it unless you are a serious high bandwidth user - even though you are paying for premium connection.

Now I'd be willing to wager that after you make that phone call that all of a sudden your bandwidth jumps up leaps and bounds from what you are seeing right now...

I have Road Runner turbo with Time Warner Cable - I only use them for internet, and just recently I went through this same thing, speed testing from various sites on the net.... gather up the speeds I'm showing and then make a call to Time Warner..... I ask, they tell, and then low and behold - test again and HEY its all better now... They checked my line and clicked a button and imagine my surprise - my bandwidth is above what it should be and then it settled down to what is stated to be delivered...
Personally I have an idea that they have a computer that starts regulating how much bandwidth is dispersed and where they can cut corners which can be reset straight with the click of a button, and they utilize this to help their own internal resources, whilest still making that top dollar...

Also, keep in mind, the ISP likes to have you check while you are on the phone with them certain bandwidth sites that always give back the best numbers like fiber optic backbones to certain cities from them.... so things always look pristine on their behalf.... - oh and thats usually after they click that button....

Oh and also - you can't rule out the possibility that if your modem is old it might be failing and giving you really poor results as well, in which a CS guy should be dispatched to test and replace if necessary. AT&T's modems suck, and get replaced all the time - trust me.... I went through 5 of them at work over a period of 3-4 years. GRRR I hate AT&T.....

I have a gut feeling that I have damaged phone lines. When I was digging the trench for the new irrigation system, after the pool builders ripped out my old one, I put it in the easement line and hit the phone line with the shovel about 20 times. My fear is they will come out and blame it on me, since it is my fault. I figured going with cable would just bypass this whole issue.

My internet did get slow after the pool build so it seems to go hand in hand. That being said, AT&T said they did a line check and it was fine.

I have my original modem which is 4 years old so maybe that is the true issue.

I will start where you said and go from there.

BTW- Here are the "speeds" that I got when I tested.
Download speed: 358kbps
Upload speed: 412kbps

Here's one I just did today;

EDIT***It's a Dynex 10/100 Fast Ethernet 5 port.

I don't know. BB had one for 20 bucks so I just grabbed it. I can stick my head behind the credenza and look if I need to.

Mine is the second most expensive one they have.

Do you think it could be my phone line?

How much do you pay....? My brother pays like $25 I think

Oh and heres the test in the same building with my Road Runner Account...

My upload speed is limited - but I don't care about that... Down is acceptable for work

I'll log in at home and post a test from my RR turbo there... which is expensive $55

$31/mo. The wife is responsible for this bill so I don't know a lot about it but she said she got the next to best plan.

Speakeasy.net is on RR fiber backbone down to chicago...

Download Speed: 21386 kbps (2673.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 938 kbps (117.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Basically that is 21.3 mb/s up and
.93 mb/s down....

Ok, I just got of the phone with the ATT Rep. His test showed 321kbps and he said with the package I have, I should be between 1.5-3.5 MBPS. He did some type of test and thinks it's a connection issue residing outside. They are doing some other test and will call me back. His expectations was that this won't correct the issue and they will send a tec out tomorrow.

+1,

cancel the service call. If they find it's the buried cable you damaged, they'll charge you to re lay it.

Time Warner will do an install for free :)
+ you get new equipment and more reliable service ta boot :)
