Had an interesting experience this week.
We had to bring my Dad down to Philly for surgery last Sunday and stayed there four days.

Started with an early day, bringing him to the hospital at 5:AM and waiting around for his six hour surgery to finish.
We finally went to get something to eat.
Later, on the walk back to the hospital a women approached us holding a map.
Said she was lost.
I helped her with directions......Then she says that 'The Lord' (her words) must have sent us, and that her mom was flown by helicopter from Newark, NJ to this Philly hospital.
Also her car broke down and she is trying to get back home to her kids...however has no money.

At this point she starts to cry and asks if we could help her with bus and train fare. She was extremely convincing.
I guess it was a combination of the long day, and my wanting to do the right thing.....that, and Timika's acting ability...I gave her the $28 fare.

As we continued on back to the hospital, we wondered if maybe she made up the story.
When I talked to a few of the nurses back at the hospital about our experience; the first thing one asked was if her name was Tami or Tamika?
Apparently she was a known scam artist.

The nurse told us that it's a common thing there, and besides, the real bus or train fare is a fraction of what we gave her.
Also they would never fly a patient to Philly when she was ten minutes from NYC.

So it's Tamika 1 / Rick 0

Hey, Rick - I sure hope that your dad is okay!

As for the $28...I think it's better to give to those who don't need it (at least for the reasons they say) then to not give to those who do. So, you should be proud of yourself...sucker. :p :D

Seriously, you're a good man, dude.

Unfortunately, there is no Snopes for face to face interaction.

That is the problem with these scams - your choice is to either give the money or harden your heart. You made the right choice!

PS - But you still got suckered!:p:D

Dont feel bad rick, that is nothing...

I am out for a walk one day with the dogs, when I see a couple with a baby stuck with the hood up. They were in an old clunker and I walked over to see if they needed help..

Turns out as they told me , they were from New Hampshire, the baby was 8 months old they were 19 and 20, she was kicked out of her home because she wouldn't have an abortion, he had no home because his father left when he was a kid and his mother passed 2 months after the baby was born {they were living with her when she passed but it was a rented home}... So they were trying to drive to New Jersey where they have a nice shelter and program that will give them child care and find them work and a permanent home....

Sounds rite to me, the baby was cute, the car had NH plates, they looked to be out of gas... I had them walk back to my house with me, I made 2 phone calls, one to one of my employees and had them bring my fuel truck over and fill the car with gas and drive it back to my house and one to my wife to pick up $1000 fuel card {ended up being 4-$300 cards}.

Their car arrived rite around the same time my wife came home with the $1200 of fuel cards, I gave them $500 in cash and my business card, they stayed for dinner and my wife was in love with the baby... They seemed like genuine good kids with no a lot of options, and again the baby was beautiful...
Anyway, after dinner I print out some directions to the town they were looking for and send them on their way with almost $2000 of my money....

About a week later I get a phone call, its the boy {mikey}, I ask how hes doing and he says great and after some small talk asks me for money...... I am getting suspicious now, just how he sounded and the phone number that came up was local.... I say did you make it to NJ, he says yes... I asked why the number he was calling from was a CT area code, and he hung up on me, I called back and left a message,
I said "Good luck to you and your family, I hope what I gave you helps you in one way or another, I have no hard feelings but I know my wives feelings would be hurt if she knew she had been lied to and taken advantage of, so please do not contact us and take care of that baby."
About a month later I got a text apologizing from the girl saying he was in jail and they had no where to go, I texted back with the number to our church and she never called them or me again... hopefully they are safe, but getting scammed sucks...

Hope your dads OK...

First off, I hope your Pop is doing well.

Second, nobody will should ever rag on you (even you) for doing what your heart told you is a good, caring thing to a person you thought was in dire need. If anyting, it reflects poorly on her.

Let's even up that score. ;)

If you want to, PM me your address and a movie or album that you'd like for Christmas. If it's on Amazon, you should have it by Wednesday. :)
+1 I'm with Adam on this one

My first thought is I'd have a really hard time killing someone over money, but a lot would depend on their manner during the robbery. They could probably quickly convince me that the world would be a better place without them... if they tried!

You did the right thing... If you send me a hundred bucks I'll let you know how you can tell who's scamming you and who isn't...
