I had purchased a pair of PSB Century 1000i speakers but I had to take the sub as well because it was a package deal. The sub is an OLD PSB Subsonic II with a 12" driver in a dual ported box. I turned it on and it hummed like Gomer Pile on meth. I took it to my technician and he replaced a few bad capacitors. Its now quiet and works really well, good enough to give it to my son-inlaw.

I seem to remember you and your son in law bonding over music gear before. Do I have that right? I think it’s great that you gifted that to him. Pretty cool.

Great that you were able to save and reuse. There’s way too much stereo equipment in landfills. We stopped taking equipment for our church fair because some people were just dumping old equipment that didn’t work. I bought an old sub when I bought a used pair of speakers for a great deal. It stopped working but unfortunately I don’t have someone around who can fix it for a reasonable price. So it sits like a side table in my garage.

What did the repair cost you?

"hummed like Gomer Pyle on meth" .... lol

But Jim Nabors" voice is rather far from that of a real basso profundo singing a C2:

And how about notes as low as C1? Could those notes have been processed by electronic manipulation? No, as octavists really exist!

Octavists really exist. Here is a good guide on bases:
