room acoustics or my Denon AVR

Im trying to determine why it seems that my imaging seems to fall to the rightt front speaker. Its like the imaging is just off a little, like more musical information is coming from the right. I think it is the acoustics but Im not sure, my room is like a long rectangle with the left speaker about 8 feet from the left side wall and the right speaker is like 4 feet from a little 3 foot wing wall on the right and then there is open room beyond that further to the right, this would make the right speaker about 20 feet from the right wall.

do any of you acoustic literate people have any suggestions?
My reciever is new, could there be a problem?

Hey Rotarhead69,

Yeh, for ideal imaging, both mains should be equidistant from the walls. As far as room acoustics or room treatments (if you're leaning that way), you might want to check out COF's threads on this topic at the Sound and Vision forum. Look under the audio section, you can't miss the threads. WARNING, it's extensive. :) Good luck.

Couple of Thoughts

Which Denon receiver? Some have the ability to automatically set up the systems by hooking in a microphone. Alternatively, you can use a SPL Meter (RadioShack) and set it up your self. Not too difficult to do. Basically you buy a test disc or cd and use that to adjust speaker levels individually until you have a good image (equal sound output from each speaker where you listen from).

In an ideal setting the main speakers are eqidistant from side and back walls and they form an equilateral triangle with your listening area (ears) at the apex.

You will often read about sound stage and how wide, deep, etc it is, this is why they discuss it, as some are not broad/deep enough and are too limited for listening other than for one person

It sounds like room acoustics. If the room isn't symmetrical, try re-cantering the speakers towards or away from your listening position. If one is too bright, a few degrees may be all you need to correct it, as well as setting the distance in feet on the receiver correctly.

I know if i move just a tad in my chair,it sounds like the setting is to heavy on one speaker but i figured out it was me moving,i need to sit still. I used a lazer on top of each front speaker to dial them in my listening position.

If you move only a 'tad' and imaging is destroyed then you need to experiment with speaker placement to get it right.

I don't recall you saying what brand speakers you are using, so it could be that they have very poor off-axis response, but I would doubt it and be more inclined to believe that the placement is simply not ideal.
