Right To Bear Arms?

But if at test isn't passed by any minorities you don't find that to be a problem? So you endorse promotion tests that are biased toward a certain social groups.
Failure to pass a test does not necessary mean that the test was biased against you, it may actually mean that you didn’t know the required information. Last time I knew information recall was color blind:rolleyes:

I see they're putting mods on spell patrol now.

Coming from a mod, whose posts come with higher expectations, this comment is not funny, it's not on topic, and it's an inappropriate slam at a good AH'er.
You obviously missed the intent. He was talking about passing tests. It was funny and ironic all at once. If I intended to be mean you would have known:rolleyes:

It was a gentle ribbing in of all places the steam vent... Jeez.

when all the minorities in your entire department fail a test it's not a fair test.

If you're failing to teach them the necessary information then you are failing as an organization to give minorities an opportunity to be succesful.

The test was unfair and probably a poorly written test anyway.

I support her nomination and see her as an excellent replacement for Souter. Souter is not a conservative and the last thing we need is a biased court to conservative ideals.

Our court is balanced and it should stay that way IMO.

What information do you have that the tests were biased?

I'm pretty sure that all of the applicants have had access to pretty much the same educational opportunities, particularly since they are all already on the fire department.

Rizzo, the guy that spearheaded the lawsuit actually paid a tutor to sharpen his skills beforehand. And you want to deny him his just due simply because others don't take the test as seriously?

Or are you saying that the minorities that failed aren't as smart as those that passed and the tests for promotions should be "dumbed down"?.

Incidentally, not all minorities failed. One of those screwed out of the promotion was Latino and another was half Latino and they were castigated by the Latin community for taking part in a lawsuit against sotomayer. Go figure...

That's okay, Dave. I'm running at Max Curmudgeon Mode (MCM) right now. It'll pass in a couple of days. Just move aside and no one will get hurt. :D

Did I?! Obviously? Or perhaps you misstated it.

Your laugh was at his expense.

What you call ribbing may be offensive or embarrassing to others. As a newly minted moderator, I'd hope you especially take that into consideration.
Did you have regular coffee this morning? :p

A shovel, a pen, a kitchen knife and a gun. What do they all have in common? For one thing, they are all tools – lay each on a table, stand back and watch. The pen will not jump up and start writing, the shovel will not shovel, the knife will not cut and the gun will not shoot. However, each can be used to harm, or with a varying degree of effort, kill another person. But you will never hear anyone refer to a writing implement as an “assault pen” even if used for such a purpose. Each was created by humans to be used by humans for certain purposes. Each one needs to be interacted with in order for it to function in any manner.
The major difference is only the gun was made to facilitate a quick kill.

There are valid points on both sides of this debate, and I say this as someone who has owned & currently owns a gun. Certain types of guns can only be legally owned by properly licensed people. A background check, permit to purchase and permit to carry is so the law abiding citizen knows the government is looking out for their best interest in regards to the responsibility of ownership. The fact that there are so many guns in the hands of those who would not be able to buy them legally is a result of so many guns being available. Every gun I ever bought was from a licensed dealer, and when I sold a gun, it was to a licensed dealer (except for a .22 pistol I sold to my brother-in-law who, I know is only interested in target shooting). My gun is kept away from my kids, and locked. I am but one out of thousands of responsible gun owners in this country. While I agree that certain guns should not be available to the general populace, telling responsible gun owners they were going to be forced to turn over their possessions & give up their right to keep arms would result in many instances of irresponsible actions by some of these citizens. This issue, along with things like legalizing pot, cracking down on drinking, improving this or that system come up from time to time so legislators can make us think they’re trying harder than they are. Law enforcement personnel as well as the ATF know full well the fight they would have on their hands if they were directed to enforce such a law and that’s why it will not be passed. And if you’re a law abiding citizen, is registering your firearm really a big deal?

I haven't read this whole thread, so I'm not sure what has already been said on this topic.

I won't say this as eloquently as others here can, but I'll give it a try. IMO, one aspect of the right to bear arms is the concept of resisting against (or even overthrowing) an unlawful and oppresive goverment. If the government knows where the guns are, then it's easier to track them down and remove them from the populace. For an established goverment, this isn't an overnight thing that happens. It's done in stages, and sometimes it's not until it's too late that the populace realizes what has happened. If a government were to be overthrown, perhaps through a military coup or by another hostile government, then the new would-be rulers may gain access to the records and begin tracking down and confiscating the guns as that would reduce the populace's means of resisting.

Criminals aren't going to register their guns, so I don't believe that the government knowing where my guns are is going to make me or anyone else any safer.
