Yes, but as I said it has to have lossy compression. It does not support uncompressed 5.1. But his TV can be set to provide compressed 5.1 as far as I can tell. If I am wrong about that, he is out of luck.
The instruction manual for that TV is awful. This is what it says about getting Dolby Digital compressed 5.1 out of the optical port.
