Yamaha RX-V663 No Surround with Hisense TV

Hello, I usually can figure this kind if problem out, but I am stumped. I have had this receiver for a long time and used the 5.1 dolby digital numerous times with my older SAMSUNG TV. So now I upgraded to a Hisense 65U7AG. I always test my surround system by using youtube 5.1 test videos. However, with the new tv it is not working. Only the front two speakers will play for all speakers 2.0. The Yamaha shows that it is getting Dolby Digital as the input. I am using Optical as the input to the receiver. I have cycled through all of the decoders/parameters. The TV is set to Optical Out and Dolby Digital. The receiver shows all 6 speakers on the display. I even reset the receiver per the manual and a tone test indicates that the receiver can see the surround speakers. What am I missing here?

I would bet the problem is that you are using an optical connection. I suspect the issue is copyright protection, but could be bandwidth.

Your receiver is from 2008 so will be early HDMI-1 most likely, and won't have an HDMI arc input/ output. There is a forcing of this with copyright protection. HDMI ARC is a system where the audio of a TV program can be sent back to the receiver by HDMI. The receiver can send picture and audio to the TV, depending on what is required. The TV can send audio back to the receiver via the same HDMI connection

There has been a forcing of these types of systems for some time. I think you may well have to treat yourself to a new receiver to go with your new TV. It sounds as if your set up is correct, but you have come unstuck by obsolete equipment.

Try resetting the tv, too? Since that's what's changed I suspect the tv or its version of the app. Have you asked Hisense?

Since the tv changed, suspect the tv or the specific app it employs. How about testing multich with other than youtube? If tv's your source then hard to test the hdmi ports, tho I'd be curious how those work currently too.

I have done a bit more research on this. Optical does not support uncompressed 5.1 audio. It does not have the bandwidth. So your TV normally transmits 2 channel audio from the optical output, unless you go to the TV menu and tell it to output compressed bit stream.

As I suspected, your receiver is too outdated for this current age.

The instruction manual for that TV is awful. This is what it says about getting Dolby Digital compressed 5.1 out of the optical port.

Dolby Digital 5.1 is lossy compression. What streaming service offers uncompressed or even lossless 5.1?

ps sure its possible the receiver crapped out in between the the two tvs, but....
