Rear Speaker Height??

I have my surround speakers set up on stands at a 110 degree angle almost even to my couch back. I have to do it this way as my couch is against the wall. The tweets come to about 40" off the ground and fire almost directly at the same height as the couch back. Though they are just about at ear level they are also at couch back level which is a problem as it seems that the couche maybe absorbing some sound.

The stands are 28" in height and as some holics recently said, rear speakers should be a bit above ear level I was wondering if going to a 30" or 34" stand would improve things a bit or make them worse as the tweeter would be several inches above ear level but free and clear of the couch back.

I guess I am asking if it would be ok to put the speakers a few inches above ear level? I know lots of people who have speakers mounted on walls without a problem.
