Power grid challenges in Texas

And then we have the bartender from NYC (AOC) claiming,, " the infrastructure failures in Texas are what you get when you don't pursue a new Green deal" . 'Asinine' occupies both sides of the aisle !
AOC's comment is spot on. GND promotes alternatives. The alternatives advances technolgies, create new and higher paying jobs, develops new industries. If we stuck with tried and true we will still be riding horses and buggies and reading by candle light.

and here I thought it was a potion of the 'alternatives' that took a crap down here in Tx.

kinda like they are doing in Texas right now .............

regardless, that was my point, with the crisis developing you have two politicians throwing out blame. There will be time for that after the lights come back on

I believe she was just responding to the Texas governor blaming the outages on something that doesn't exist. And, that upgrading infrastructure, as envisioned in the GND, may have mitigated the mess Texas is in right now.

Renewable-energy shortages accounted for only about 13% of the total outages in Texas, Insider reported.
Meanwhile, while stubbornly rejecting federal involvement in Texas' power grid, the state government is only too happy to accept federal aid in addressing the crisis.

Biden needs to get his a$$ down there and start chucking out rolls of paper towel!

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) signaled Thursday that the Energy and Commerce Committee will look into what transpired in Texas that led to millions of residents losing power and water amid the freezing weather.
Appearing at her weekly news conference, Pelosi also pledged that additional money for the Federal Emergency Management Agency would be included in the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill that the House is expected to move as early as next week.
She also took a veiled swipe at Texas’s Republican leadership, saying the large-scale failure of the state’s power grid “was in many ways predictable” and shared that one of her daughters living in Houston had been affected.
“Everybody has their personal experience,” Pelosi said. “My daughter’s home has no water. Pipes are breaking all over because of the cold. … Again, they can handle it, but a lot of people can’t.”
She said the Energy and Commerce Committee will launch “some form” of an investigation.
“When I say investigation, I mean, will look into it to see how things could have turned out better and will turn out better in the future,” Pelosi said.

"Veiled swipe"? Pelosi?

If Pelosi saw this coming, why does her daughter not have water? Even W had a cistern for holding rainwater and solar power at his place in Midland, TX. Assuming her daughter is in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, they don't need to be without power and water.

If this will be covered by the $1.9T package, I wonder who will lose money, or if they will they take it from something that shouldn't be in it.

This will probably gobble FEMA money, but really, it could have been prevented if they had insulated properly in the first place. At this point, there's no reason hot and cold weather should cause the inside temperature to drop so much, this fast since the same insulation/building practices used in a cold place works well in a hot place, so.....

I don't know exactly where you live- what are the temperature extremes? I wold think homes in your area are pretty cozy in cold weather.

And change the jets in the heaters, so LPG will work. They often come with both sets, so it should be easy enough.

That's not really fair. What is happening in Texas is due to unfettered deregulation combined with a push to a pure market economy for energy with no guardrails. All of the problems Texas is experiencing were completely avoidable with appropriate reliability requirements and meteorological parameters. I still hate wind and solar power, but renewables didn't cause the problems. Nor did gas turbines or nuclear. Not even coal, though I hate it the most. The problems in Texas are purely due to a lack of planning and strategy, because the people who set up the system (ERCOT) wanted to minimize the costs of regulation, minimize the cost per KWH of power, and did not want to have obligations to authorities outside the state. I feel sorry for everyone in Texas who is suffering because their elected officials and appointed authorities were not really looking out for their best interests. Sort of like allowing construction on the west coast without adequate earthquake building codes.

Taking crap about energy reliability from anyone from California is silly. California is an energy production, distribution, and reliability disaster.

Just like football fans dislike the Dallas Cowboys, much of the nation enjoys it when Texas gets a come uppance. This Drew Sheneman cartoon sums it up.

Ha! Texas has been taking mucho "socialist hand-outs". That's how all of that nation-leading wind power got built. Here's a nice list. I know they're called "credits", but the real name is "subsidies".

incentives

And the industry even gets COVID stimulus dollars:

And there's renewable energy credits:

I wonder how much solar and wind power would really cost without these subsidies?

and thought they were all getting together for a big Texas BBQ, seriously though, the heaters/furnaces are still gonna need electricity to run blowers and or pumps.

You know that's just to make people that live here and don't like "socialism" happy? Plenty of "handouts" being taken, but we like to pretend that isn't happening.

Duh, education doesn't make specific companies money. Why spend money on something when you don't get a return?
