Plug or not to Plug??

Hey All,

I am a new to the whole HT scene and have a question about loudspeakers (I tried the search but didn't come up with anything). I recently purchased a pair of Monitor Audio RS6's to build my HT around. When unboxing them I noticed that they came with some foam plugs for the ports located on the back of the towers. My question is would I want to use these or not? I am guessing I would as the port is for lower bass frequencies and I have an SVS SB12-Plus on order and will properly set the crossover point at 80Hz. Am I correct in my thinking?

You probably only need to plug them if you are putting them in a confined space or very near a wall, and even then, probably only if you are going to run them full range. If you cross them at 80, just leave them as is no plug. I notice they are front ported, are you saying there is another port on the speaker or only the one in front?

I have the MA Bronze floorstanders and the midbass chamber is ported to the front, while the lower frequency driver is ported to the rear. I have mine close to a wall, so the port plug is in place. I cross mine over at 60hz, so I can get away with a lower low pass filter setting on my sub. I'm very happy with the MA setup, it's really musical, but when I listen to 2 channel music in pure direct, my receiver lets the 2 speakers see a full range signal, and the sub is defeated. Overall, a nicely designed speaker; they won-out over the PSB Alpha T, because the bass was over emphsized in my room and the old sock trick didn't work as well as the MA foam port plug.
