Please Help, No Sound from the Receiver.

I just recently moved and after getting all the new furniture in the place, I decided to finally unpack and setup my home theater system, which is powered by a Yamaha HTR-5760 AV receiver.

I hooked up everything and turned on the system, but there was no sound coming from my satellite speakers. What's strange is the subwoofer is working fine, and if I plug in headphones, it still works. It's just the speakers that are not being powered.

The receiver is not going into any protection mode, you can leave it on for hours and will NOT automatically turn off. It also decodes everything, because it recognizes DTS, Dolby Digital ETC...

The speakers are the only thing that's not working. And yes, I am hooking it up correctly and even tried different wires AND speakers. This is just so frustrating and any help would be appreciated to the extreme. :D

Welcome to the forum, penguinhunter!

First thing that comes to mind is to double check that you have the internal amplifiers turn on. On the front face of the receiver are two buttons for the "A" and "B" speakers. I'm guessing that you are using the "A" speaker connection. Either way, make sure that either the "A" or "B" speaker indicator is showing on the front display. The easiest thing is to just push the buttons and see if you can hear anything.

Hi Adam, thanks for replying.

Yeah, I've done that already and there's no sound, not even a slight hiss. It's so weird, the receiver looks like it should work, but for some reason, the speakers don't.

I've even put on music and selected it to play on all seven channels, and not one speaker would output anything. Just the sub, which is powered on it's own and hooked up using an RCA wire (Sub Cable). And of course, the headphones.

Darn, I was hoping it was something really easy. :D

Did you run the auto setup routine? That might help troubleshoot some things.

Another option is to do a factory reset. That's explained on page 75 of the manual. The directions are as follows:
  • Start with the unit in standby mode
  • Hold down STRAIGHT (EFFECT) on the front panel and press STANDBY/ON ("FACTORY PRESET" will show on the front display)
  • Press STRAIGHT (EFFECT) to select the desired setting on the front panel (either "Reset" or "Cancel")
  • Press STANDBY/ON to confirm your choice

Yeah, I already did the factory reset and nothing. :(

I even popped off the cover (not that I could really fix it) hoping to maybe see a fuse had blown, but couldn't find anything suspicious.

Obviously I'm not smart enough in this area, but does it make sense that the sub works fine and as do the headphones, but the speakers aren't working at all?

I would guess if those work, the speakers should too, or am I way off?

And your dog is awesome!

Thanks for the compliment to Niki!

It seems like you're doing on the right things. I might be forgetting something obvious, but I think that you've done everything that I would. If it's not a setting, it certainly might be a fuse. I don't know where those are located, though.

Can anyone else here help with checking the fuse(s)?

Well, while we wait to see if anyone can help with the fuses, I checked around a bit and found this thread at AudioKarma about the same issue. It doesn't mention a fix, but it does mention that you can check if the protection circuit turned on. If you haven't done that, perhaps give that a try and see if you notice anything.

I'll do that! It seems like he had the exact issue.

Thanks for helping!

So I opened it up again and only could find two fuses, which both are next to the power source and they same to be fine.

Did you check them visually or were you able to check continuity across the fuses (e.g. with a multimeter)?

P

Just visually, I don't have a multimeter. I'll probably pick one up in a little bit at RadioShack.

If you don't get any better answers tonight, I encourage you to try back tomorrow or Monday (post something to bump the thread to the top). I'm guessing that Saturday night won't have a lot of traffic.

Best of luck. If I find anything more, I'll let you know.

sone things to check

Adam has given you some great answers.

You said the headphones work; make sure they are unplugged, when you plug them in it disables all the speakers and output jacks.

Do your speaker lights, light up and indicate A, B or both indicating the speakers selected.

Make sure the output is not "muted" indicated by a blinking "mute" indiactor on the front panel.

Make sure tone control is "bypassed".

direct stero will bypass all the units' decoders and DSP processors.

Check the speaker level ( -10dB to + 10 dB) of each speaker.

If memory guard is on and some of the settings are incorrect, you can't change them.

Sometimes you can have problems if the input mode is set to DTS or ANALOG instead of AUTO. This can also happen if the inputm oe is set to ANALOG and the input is actually DTS encoded.

Good Luck, you manaul can be found at http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/av-receivers-amps/htr/htr-5760_black__u/?mode=model

The power supply section to your power amp board is dead.

The low voltage part to the preamp/processor is fine, this is why it is only the power amps that don't work.

Probably a solder whisker that caused a short from the trauma of the move.

The receiver needs repair/replacement.

I see your receiver has pre outs. Probably your best long term solution is to keep your receiver as a pre/pro and use external amplification. You won't even have the power amps idling. This is likely a good solution for you. Decent external amps will beat receiver amps by miles.

Thanks everyone for your help, it's pretty awesome strangers would come to my aid like this. Unbelievable.

TLS Guy, I'm going to sound like a noob, but how much would the amp cost, and what should I be looking for when purchasing one?

Is your system 5.1 or 7.1?

If your receiver worked fine before, but now doesn't work after you moved, it just seems like it would be a setting to me. It might be a hardware issue, but it might not be. Have you tried unplugging it for a while then plugging it back in? As strange as that might sound, it works sometimes. I had a Pioneer of about that age stop working, and I had to unplug it for about two days (shorter periods didn't work)...then bam, it worked perfectly. Oh, and no, I can't explain it. :) I didn't mention that before because you had it unplugged for a while, but it might be worth a try.

If you can't get yours to work again, here's my two cents - don't use it as a pre/pro unless you can get the amps for cheap. By cheap, I mean a lot less than it will cost you to get a new receiver. I say this because that receiver is about seven years old, and receivers have come a long way since then (better auto calibration systems, newer connections such as HDMI, and newer audio codecs such as DTS-HD MA).
