Well, after much deliberating, I decided not to go completely DIY but to buy a set of PE BR-1 speaker kits. I figured since I have no time or equipment to make my own cabinets, this would be a good bang for the buck system. They will be the left/right channels on my 5.1 system, used about 80% music / 20% video games in a dorm.

Can't wait! They should be here tomorrow. I'll post pics and listening impressions when I get them put together!

You made a good choice. The BR-1s are the lowest priced decent sounding kit speaker I know of. They easily beat many commercially available low-priced speakers. The manual that comes with them is a great primer for first-time DIY speaker builders.

If at a later time, you become interested in improving these speakers, there is a design for a modified crossover for the BR-1 that somewhat flattens their midrange response. It will require you to build your own crossover boards.
