The tariff issue is more complex than people realize, particularly when it comes to food. A lot of food grown in Canada is processed in the U.S. Take berries grown in British Columbia as an example. They get shipped to Washington state for processing and packaging and are then sent back to B.C. for sale! Would tariffs on both sides lead to a 25% tariff shipping to WA and then another 25% tariff on the goods returning to Canada? What about the quantity of fruits and vegetables that California sells to Canada?
I know one thing for certain. The Canadian government will be looking at promoting more local processing plants to secure our food supply and that will mean less business for American food processors.
We also have some very different philosophies on food supply. The supply chain management for products like dairy, eggs and chickens make trade deals much more complex.
