I got the Lassus CD by the Hillard Ensemble today. There may be four dudes on vocals but there is definitely a fifth guy applying a vice to the genitalia of at least one of the four.
I have to find that other thread to see if there is any indication why this would be a must have for me but I like it. My girl says it sounds like Catholic Church Music but never mind her. I can't wait to play it on the main system in the living room which has a better sound than the system I'm currently listening to it on and I'm looking forward to reading the little pamphlet. I'm pretty sure that I'm the first kid on my block with this title.
The point being that your contributions here have introduced to new (new for me) music and I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on it. Not to mention all the video hulabaloo that you've become a fanatic about. Hey, even Adam got a Blu-ray player.

Actually, I looked up my old samurai thread, and monkey was teasing me about how my selected image was not very manly. So when I briefly looked for a ninja image, I started chuckling when I saw it. Way to go, Meat!

I know, I tried to warn you. I understand that it would turn a lot of people off to it perhaps. I did hear a Bach Cantata once, where I was in disbelief that he still had testicles. My friend playing the CD for me insisted that he did. It was, um, pardon the pun, NUTZ! ok, I just looked up castrati, and one article says that chopping off the jewels was outlawed in Italy by 1870. I'm glad to be in the 21st century. It was a random rec. I enjoy contrapuntal music very much, and so it shouldn't surprise I like Bach, and for jazz, perhaps Mingus being my fav. Anyways, it was my most recent vocal acquisition. If you ever do feel funny about guys singing that high, there are a lot of beautiful works with females involved, but almost always in significantly larger ensembles. I would recommend Josquin works for that.

I'm not a big jazz fan but trust that this is some good stuff. If I ever run across it I'll know it for what it is.
I don't 'feel' anything about the gender of a voice.
I don't think I'm going to rush right out and get the box set on this one.
In my Googling words found in this one post I also found out what a sonata was.
Clearly you are on the 9th Dan level of music appreciation.

Gosh, "sonata" is probably the most nebulous term for a western musical format there is!
Well, ok. You could say, in a nutshell, that a sonata most basically represents the harmonic movement from the tonic (original key) to the dominant (the 5th tone of the key), and then back to the tonic/original. LOL.
If you were going to learn about what a sonata is, I would recommend to you, or anyone, that the one to study is the form developed in the classical/romantic era. Especially you, since you like Beethoven, and are learning about Haydn.
Basically, you'll have two thematic ideas. (Think about that 4-note opening theme of Beethoven's 5th, for instance. A bit later, you'll have the second theme, which is often quite contrasting in nature, and this case is no exception with the more light-hearted, lilting second theme.) The philosophical idea is that these two themes affect each other, create a thematic/musical contrast. Art imitates life. As the music develops, changes, you hear these themes again at the end, in what is called the recapitulation. It is here that the themes have lived their adult lives, are matured, and are heard in the perfect sense. When you did hear the very opening, those themes can be thought of, I suppose, as young brazen adults. The music in between is their journey through life together, and the end is the mature result. It is very likely that when a composer during this area wrote such a piece, that the original/inspirational idea is in fact located at the end of the work.

My quick take on sonata is that it is a played piece and a contata is all vocal.
Funny you should mention the 5th because I just got that on vinyl today.
I guess having it on CD and DVD-A wasn't enough.
