newb looking to upgrade

I'm pretty much a newb to home theater in general, but I'm trying to get there. In the past few months I've gotten a PS3, a samsung 1080p tv, and a denon 2807 receiver. Only problem now is I'm still using old KLH speakers and sub that were bought back in the 90s(don't know the models, sorry). They sound decent to me..seeing as I am new to all this, but I know there is much much better...they were almost certainly bought cheaply at best buy or the likes. I want to upgrade these, but have a somewhat limited budget. I don't know exactly what the budget is, but I'm thinking somewhere around $1k for 5.1 system. I love to do diy stuff, but figure a kit may be my best option as I've never built speakers before and have no wood working experience. Suggestions?

As for a subwoofer kit, Parts Express has few that are reportedly very good: part numbers: 300-760 (10" woofer), 300-762 (12" woofer), 300-764 (15" woofer), and they have another 15" kit (300-770), it's not as good as the other three, but it is cheaper.

PE also has a 'project showcase' that has cabinet specs, component values, and so on, that is, if you wanted to start your woodworking experience by making you speakers. (it's in the left hand column on the home page, right under "DIY resources")

I took a look at these, and they look pretty cool, but they're pretty expensive. They are as expensive as all the HSU subs that seem to come pretty well recommended. How would they compare to these? I would like the fact that I built them myself, but not at the expense of a lesser sub and features for the same money.

These would compare very well to the commercial offerings.
