Need Advice: Best Upgrade Path for My Current Setup?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been slowly building my home audio setup over the past couple of years, and I feel like I’ve hit a point where I’m not sure what to upgrade next.

Current setup:

• Entry-level AV receiver
• Bookshelf speakers (front L/R)
• Basic subwoofer

I mostly use it for movies (about 70%) and music (30%), and my room is medium-sized. Overall it sounds decent, but I feel like I’m missing that “wow” factor.

I’m debating between:

1. Upgrading to better front speakers
2. Adding a center channel
3. Getting a more powerful subwoofer
4. Replacing the receiver

What would you prioritize first for the biggest improvement?

Would really appreciate any suggestions or personal experiences. Thanks!

Thanks! Right now I’m using basic bookshelf speakers (nothing high-end, just entry-level ones) with a budget AV receiver. The sub is also pretty basic.

As for budget, I’m thinking somewhere in the mid-range—not super cheap, but not high-end either.

I’m mainly looking for a noticeable upgrade in movie experience (dialogue clarity and impact).

Would you still recommend starting with better front speakers, or going for a center channel first?

Too vague, what particular brands and models of gear are you using? I have no idea what you consider basic/entry level/mid level/high end either.

The two biggest variables in sound quality are the speakers, and the room...

Typically the best place to invest for optimum bang for the buck is the speakers.

After that - amps and/or AVR only need to be varied, if it either doesn't have the desired feature/decoder/roomEQ, or the amp capabilities don't match the new speakers (some speakers can be matched with pretty much any amp, others impose difficult loads and then you need to be much more selective with the amp to get optimal results)

Beyond these generic advice items - we do need to know your actual budget... and what your budget allocations are....

I know people who consider a $5,000 amp/avr "budget" - which it may well be compared to something like the Trinnov components! - to others, an economy amp/AVR is a $500 item.... that's a 10x difference, yet both are using the same terminology.... so we need to clarify where you sit!

Right now, I'm assuming you picked your speakers off someone's garbage pile after they had been out for a night in the rain.

Just tell is what you have, make, model numbers etc. Also pictures are very helpful to give advice particular to your situation.

Yes, I don't understand the reluctance to state make and model numbers. Can't make any recommendations without a frame of reference. If it's a budget system then speakers are usually the best place to start but would need to know how much the op is willing to spend.
