Monolith Five alternatives?

Ok Ive decided to go duals and get an amp down the road. After doing a fair bit of research I have found a lot of people saying that my receiver is very capable in the 4ohm department. Still deciding between hsu and rythmik. Hsu will save me about $800 that I could honestly use to get a nice bdp95 oppo or something. I think Im on the right track now

That's the last player I had about 5 years ago. It was pretty impressive. I don't need anything more than 1080p for now. Are there better options for about $700?

I'd be somewhat concerned about aging/past use and just how long service/parts might be available. Do you need to play SACD or DVD Audio or other special discs? I'm still with 1080p myself, the 203 is the only 4k device I have....bought it the day Oppo announced they were ceasing production of the players. I'd just be more comfortable with something newer, altho the feature set on the 95 is still nice....

Really? First it's old amps and turntables and now it's digital players. To be fair tho I don't think I've ever seen a negative comment about Oppo. They seem pretty universally loved.

I know this won’t be really popular, but I bought oppo 203 new when it came out around 4-5 years ago. Want to to say it was $550 brand new. It was glitchy, froze and had audio drops. Return it and got replacement and that one wouldn’t even play most my movies. Just had an error reading on everything. So I moved on to the Sony 800 4k player and picture was just as good and it sounded the same. Really to me, I experienced no improvements getting an oppo. Really it’s just a digital source and it either works or doesn’t. I have a Sony 700 now for Dolby vision and it’s just as good as the others. We don’t use it much anymore though, streaming is king in our house now. Honestly with great internet speeds on something like an Apple TV it looks and sounds just as good as any disc.

It’s getting hard to even find discs or Blu-ray’s. All my local stores that are smaller chains dropped them. Frys went out of business and Best Buy here barely has any. Within a few years it’ll be something you can only buy online. It really is going away. Obviously my opinion there.

If it was me I’d buy a new avr well before an oppo. The most important part of your setup is your display for movies. Biggest 4k tv of quality you can fit in your space changes everything. Then get avr to feed everything and next get subs. Speakers will come next with center channel being the most important one. Then you set it up right with proper room treatment. Really amps are the last thing I’d think about. Atmos speakers would be nice but it doesn’t work in every room. Expensive 4k player wouldn’t ever be important or add any benefit.

Well my 203 has been just spot on in every respect, absolutely no issues but I suppose every brand is bound to sell a lemon here and there. I also use several different Sony bluray players, and the Oppo does beat them in overall features/capabilities/connectivity (but no built in apps like the Sonys have but tend not to use those)....and both brands can play my SACDs which is my odd type of disc requirement for an optical player. I agree the discs are starting to dry up, many new releases I get thru the disc service on Netflix (yeah, I still use that) are now not available on bluray, and only on dvd. The choices overall vs streaming have been steadily dwindling, too. We're moving towards no optical discs but I'd still rather have players for now.....

I bought the 800 series sony UHD DVD player and haven't played an UHD DVD yet. (I just rent from Red Box as the audio is better than streaming). Frankly I personally wouldn't invest a lot of money in an Oppo but I'm probably not the person to take advantage of it's strengths. You can get an Sony UHD for pretty cheap if you are patient especially used and have a lot of money to invest more into those subs or AMP

They don't make OPPO UHD players anymore. They don't sell them anywhere, they've long been out of stock. You probably could buy one from one of the rapists on eBay.
