Class D technology is getting better and better and with that prices will come down.
Prices will only come down if new companies bring Class D to market. The existing companies selling A/B amps are trying to keep prices high.

I too would really like to see an ATI-built Outlaw or Monolith Amp featuring the Hypex ClassD modules. The weight of a nice Chassis plus the circuit boards for the Amps, SMPS and additional OP Amp/Input Buffer if wanted is almost nothing. I would think they could get that to market easily, too.
If you desire a reasonably priced multi-channel Hypex NCore amp design I would look at the Nord One MP NC252 4-8 250W Channel Amplifier.

Ryan already has his Hypex modules for a multich diy amp build....

Already have 5 each NC400s and SMPS600N400s for 5 monoblock amps. :D

Oops forgot you were going full monobloc style...what are the cases?

Not a good time to buy Chinese Aluminum. I've tried calling US Customs to get a cost on the duties... I've seen references as high as 80%. So Ghent is out for the moment.

Been looking at a single chassis solution from DIY Audio Store, can do 5-channel Monoblock configuration.

Just need to find my login to the DIYAudio Store Forum and find out if they can predrill the parts I need to fit the modules. :)

LOL you actually called Customs and talked to someone who knew what they were doing (usually a commodity specialist team based on HTS)? Good on ya, mate! :) Not sure what the duties on aluminum would mean, as the specific product/form imported is what counts....Ghent sounds Belgian for some reason.

Ha! Ha-Ha! Hahahahahahhhahahaaaaaaaahhahhahahahahahhhhhhhhh! :p
I called... I never spoke to anyone.
The consolidated code China uses for export shows up online with scant info, but some of what turned me off as the possibility of that 80% tariff.
Their HS Code is 7616999000... Non technical Aluminum parts.

Since I haven't talked to DIY yet, I haven't pursued further trying to get someone to help answer the question re: ghent.
Frankly, I'd rather have a single chassis solution instead of the two from Ghent.

Within 7 days of restocking (after being out of stock for months), the Monolith amps for 5 channel and 7 channel are "out of stock" again until late Nov to early Dec 2020. If you want one, I would suggest using the "Notify Me" button for a better chance to snag one.

I placed the Kill-O-Watt on the Monolith 7X and played some music with the Denon 4700 thru it.
Here is the power usage:

111.png

The unit uses 0.1 watts when the front power button is off but the rear switch is on. Once the front switch is on it registered 155 watts with a low 34 volume on the Denon 4700. After the unit warmed up a bit the baseline number dropped to 140 watts. As you can see whether you run two channels in stereo or all 7 channels with Auro-3D the power use is very close.

I also tested the Denon 4700 in preamp mode. The Kill-o-watt registered 46 watts for the Denon 4700 for all volume levels while preamp mode was selected in "Amp Assign". This ranged from a volume of 34 - 65 on the Denon 4700. The same 46 watt usage appears whether Stereo or all channels were driven with Auro-3D. This seems to confirm the volume level does not cause the amp section to draw additional power while configured in Preamp mode.

The Denon DCD 800NE CD player used 12 watts in this test. If I play the Monolith 7X, Denon 4700 and Denon CD player at a volume of 65 it looks like the total power use is approx 258 watts depending on what CD is selected.

Again, Yes the amp input is disconnected from the pre-amp output. No, the amp's power rail, therefore "bias" remains on. So to say the power amp circuit is disconnected from "power" could be misleading. I think Gene made this point (in his own way of course..) before too.

@PENG - So you think the 46 watts registered by the 4700 is also for the internal amp stage? The power draw stays at the 46 watt level no matter where the volume control is moved to. The 4700 still emits heat in "Preamp" mode so maybe some of that is created by the "DC power rail" being on? What exactly is a power rail?

I fixed the text above to meet your observation that the power rail is still live.

Is it the rail voltage mentioned in this article?

Thank you!

Yes, he explained it in the first paragraph. Power rail is commonly referred to as the "rail" where the amplifier gets its DC voltage from, and in essence that's the power supply for the amplifier. The power flow is, from the AC outlet to the power supply supply transformer, to the DC rectifier bridge and the output of the rectifier bridge is connected to the so called "power rail".

Below is a power supply block diagram, the simplest one I could find on the net, without having to worry about copy right:

In a real practical circuit, you can imagine the output of the bridge rectifier will be connected to what we call the "DC power rail", that powers the amplifier circuitry.

I have read the sms of some models including the X8500H but not the X4700H. The X4400H, X4500H, SR6012,SR6014, SR7012's rail voltages are exactly the same, pretty sure the X4700H and SR7015 will be the same too.

Gene mentioned more than once about in the so called pre-amp mode, the power amp section would still be "powered". It is just the signal input from the pre-amp get "disconnected".

In his video review of the SR8015, he actually emphasized that (not allowing D+M's Phil Jones to overlooked the important point I guess;).

He suggested (and I have done exactly that since I had my X4400H over a year ago) that users set the Eco to always "On", to avoid the heat dissipation in the power amp section because it is still "connected to power". Strictly speaking, even for models without preamp mode such as my X4400H, one should set Eco to always on anyway as it won't affect the preamp section. That is, as long as the internal amps are not used.

You can fast forward to 6:17 to hear that part.
