Keep the interior doors in your home closed. This is just in case a window lets go or debris breaks through. Have some heavy blankets or a mattress ready to throw up over a broken window if needed. The wind and water is not the major problem at this point, it's the flying debris. If you're in a flood area the rising water can be a significant problem. Be ready to move to higher ground or floor. If you do end up moving to an upper floor or worse the attic, be sure to have a heavy hammer or pry bar in case you're forced to break through the roof sheeting. Stay in your home and stay safe. Either the ground will be saturated and the septic might back up or the sewer system will be backed up due to power loss or excess storm water filling the pipes. Sanitary sewer systems require pumps and electricity to operate. The water you see sitting around in the streets the next few days might not be just storm water. No city water here either Rick, I have filled four blue plastic 50 gallon cans with fresh water and resealed the lids they are on my back deck blocking the path to my french doors, small gen. for the fridge and heat if needed with 40 gallons of gas, and four 36 x 60 x 5/8 ply pre cut in the utility room with the dewalt ready to patch a window if needed, bathtub is full, kitchen sink is full, laundry tub is full. The guys that barbeque indoors because the power is out or the ones that feel cold and get asphyxiated. How about the ones eatting food w/o refrigeration two days later. Let's not forget our survival skills and accept a little discomfort. I'm a gulf coast resident 3 miles from the danger so i've been through it a bit. I almost forgot to mention the one that died from the generator fumes that came in through an open or broken window.
