- is it doing it cleanly without distortion?
This one often fools hobbyists. They play, for example, a 10Hz tone, but their overall reproduction chain has trouble doing it cleanly, so it spits out a signal with harmonic distortion which is the original sound mixed with spurious, undesirable, new "distortion products" at multiples of that tone— so 20Hz, 30Hz, etc.—and
those they do detect (because they are in the audible frequency range,
not infrasonic) and are hence fooled into thinking: "Both my system can produce, and I can hear,
10Hz because I just tested it for myself and I heard it!"
Here for example is a graphic showing the expected harmonic distortion generated by a 100Hz tone:
People with small systems that can't faithfully play 100Hz would report that they can "hear the bass" but they are simply hearing the higher distortion frequencies of 200Hz, etc., and are being tricked by that distortion.
As they upgrade their system so it truly can properly produce the lowest frequencies (and at adequate clean levels) their next limitation is when the frequencies become so low they are infrasonic hence undetectable. . . . unless they are elephants.
