I was in high school when I first heard of his death and that was 30 years ago but I remember it like yesterday(ok that's a McCartney song but you know).it was 20 years ago today that some tool took our boy away.Thank you John Lennon for all the music you left us. SI had the announcement during the game on their site:Yes, my radio station wklh was replaying the discussion between Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford "un-aired to the public" whether or not they should announce this news over the air, and Cosell was against going live with it during the game, while Gifford stated unequivocally it should be done....
Cosells reply was basically to me was - ok fine - I'll try to fit it in... it really sounded like the news of John Lennon's death had no place on air during his broadcast and when he finally did announce it his tone and demeanor were completely different...
You could hardly hear them talking about this, as it wasn't live.... but it was interesting to listen too..
Here is a link I found to that sound byte....

Actual off air is at just before 8:00m, although the whole video is worth watching.
My point was the un-aired commentary that went on before that announcement.... Thats all.... I never heard about that until this morning...SI had the announcement during the game on their site:
Cosell was hesitant because of their friendship. I can't seem to make the clip work but from what I understood from hearing that news this morning mentioned Cosell was shaken but Gifford convinced him of the magnitude of this event and it should supersede any football game. Nowadays we go live with everything....My point was the un-aired commentary that went on before that announcement.... Thats all.... I never heard about that until this morning...
