You probably won't have anyone here telling you there's life beyond basic, consumer-grade electronics, but there is. If you have phenomenal speakers, you could easily hear it too.
Bingo, even if your JBL TIK series speakers are what you say they are (which they are not) you are chocking them back. Not with your amp so much as with your "consumer-grade" receiver.

Try some different stuff

See if you can demo some different stuff, or borrow from friends. Try a simple, audio-only rig with just a two-channel amp/pre. Try some stuff with tubes and some digital stuff (PS Audio, tripath, H20, Nuforce). Try big SS amps. A big SS amp with a tubed pre might be just the ticket.

Point being, there are lots of ways to skin the cat. You are in the fortunate position of having the outlet (speakers) that will reveal all the nuance that is available. Some will tell you none of it will make a difference. Decide for yourself, with your own ears.

Why do some people feel the need to slam or diminish other people's speakers or gear?

Amazing how many "experts" there are in this hobby.

Unless you've spent significant time with a pair of speakers or piece of gear, in you own environment, and experimented with matching different components; I don't see how you come to a conclusion about any speakers or gear.

well i see we have an audiance with the standing ovation and all ...any way i do believe that it is always better to have matching gear than mixed brands ...but your correct tubes are nice ...if your into 2 channels ...i am ...but i also love 5 6 and 7 channels also ....

its somewhat true ... i can hear very clearly if the recording is good , great , or bad and worst if its an ammature recording...

examples of good studio recording cds

george michael's Patience
madonna's american life

you hear every bell every chime in them...great to hear

bad recordings
garbage bleed like me

although i love the band the recording is not that great ...you can hear that the mixing in the cd isnt that good ..some time the speakers show that some sounds are too harsh .... but when i put them on other cd players and speakers , car system for example the sound of the cd is good because those speakers do not show that much ....

worst kind of recordings

my own downloaded mp3 songs ...i cant even play them on my speakers because the songs sound so terrible , but again when i play the same cd in my car it sounds great

Mulester,

Are you female? That passive-aggressive style of yours reminds me of my ex(thankfully)-wife. Oh, and she loved the sound of her voice most of all, too.

Kindly keep the verbose, wink-and-a-grin, not-so-subtle flames you seem to prefer to yourself and off this forum. It would be appreciated.

??

Why attack Mulester7 over this? Because it's cool? The comments were mine and actually weren't intended to be hostile or agressive.

It seemed like Amadeo was honestly interested in how to improve electronics upstream of the TIKs. I don't know the speakers or preferences of the listener(s). However, I do know that a lot of options are available to customize sound to one's taste. Granted, if you want to send your chosen signal to many channels, the options decrease considerably. I don't mean the number of brands, rather the underlying topology and philosophy of the piece.

A number of 2-channel preamps, tube, passive, and solid state have Home Theater Bypass modes that will allow your HT receiver to perform the preamp duties for your main speakers. Thus, a sucessful HT/2-channel system can be effectively built. Your chosen 2-channel amp can still run your main speakers without inconvenient unplugging and reconfiguration. Flip the switch to use the gigi preamp and slickster amp in 2-channel mode.

I don't agree about the brand-matching thought at all. It is true that every component is not optimally suited for every other component by every other brand, but this is a function of gain and impedance rather than the brand of the component. Branch out, try some other, off-brand stuff. If you decide you don't like any of it, Great! You'll then KNOW you've got an optimal system, instead of just assuming it.

That is an excellent unit especially when you match it with the RMB-1095. What are you running for a source(DVD/CD)? I use to run the RSP-1068 and was very pleased with it I have only had one demo with the RSP-1098 and it was top notch.

.....Miklorsmith, I appreciate the comments, but it doesn't matter at all....if we come here in an attitude of helping others and to learn some things ourselves, ego should not enter in....but with a group of mortal humans, it always does.....
