OMG, I can't believe I still have to wait until August 14th to try these out!
Don't worry as it will be worth the wait! The 530's are true overachievers just as Mr. Timbers designed them to be. :):):):)

Cheers,

Phil

Saw these JBL HLS810 and 610 Speakers on ebay for $90-130 and thought they look similar to these. Anyway I'm sure these don't even come close to the SQ, but looked like little brothers...

That looks like a tractrix horn, much like what Klispch uses. Who knows, it could be quite good. I would love to give one a spin and also get some measurements. I have to wonder how it compares to the Klipsch implementation of tractrix horns.

Shady I was looking at user reviews and they seemed well liked. Sure not 530's but hey on a budget they would be nice. You gonna get a pair to test? That would be awesome. :D

Not going to get a pair to test, sorry. But hey, if anyone wants a pair of those tested, they can send them on over here!

The HLS series appears to use a cheap poly tweeter. That's basically the same level of the Klipsch Synergy series.

That is not necessarily a bad thing. A good speaker can still be made from inexpensive components.

Who knew you could make money selling loudspeakers. Go figure.
Yet in a recent sale I picked up a pair of the 590s for $900 delivered and saw that the 520 went for as little as $230 and the 530 for $330. Seemingly the line is being closed out but with some high prices for the last few pieces....

Crazy. There's nothing but high praise for how good they sound for the price. They can't make enough of them, they sell out - and they want to discontinue them???

Seems JBL is moving away from their home consumer line more than anything. The 5 series did get more popular towards the end it seems. I'm glad I got a set, and got deals on all of 'em (picked up a set of 530s with a 520 for $600 used in addition to the nice deal on the new 590s), they are very nice speakers.

The JBL HLS series are decent - and are nice sounding. However the Studio 5 series are clearly in a higher league. They were easy to open up; the screws to the woofer are hid behind the extended rubber surround.

First two HLS speakers I saw from a search, the 610 & 615, show both are discontinued by mfr...

They use a cheap poly tweeter, however they did a nice job with it. Infinity and DCM
use to do the same thing. The JBL HLS are from the late 90's.

Yeah had a feeling they sounded decent. I mean if you can score ones for cheap. They'd made a nice 2.1/5.1 setup.

They have some great shaped ones on ebay and the tweeter can be easily changed. Lots of mods online.

How about the Studio 230?
Anyone have any experience/opinion about them?
(they seem to be sold out, also)

I own the 530's (and 590's) and love them. I hoped a buddy setup a home theater this summer and he bought some 230's and they are solid bookshelves. The 530's are a better speaker, but also considerably more money. The 230 had many of the great traits of the 530's. Good imaging, nice highs, and decent bass (you will need a sub).
