Inexpensive in wall speakers

Yes, I currently have Bose. By reading this and other forums, I have found that this makes me tantamount to the devil .

I have a Yamaha RX-V1600 receiver, and a 42" Hitachi plasma mounted on the wall in my 15x11 room. I now want some in wall speakers to replace the Bose I currently have. The Bose has an unpowered sub.

I'm going with in wall as I like the look of no wires, and my 20 month old likes pulling things from their proper places. As my wife is ticked for my latest spending spree (receiver, pool table, etc.), they HAVE to be inexpensive, and have to have paintable grills. I'm willing to wait for the "honey I couldn't pass them up..." deal.

Let me know what you think, or what questions you have that I can answer.

To be honest, when I hear the words in-wall, and inexpensive. The two don't mix. You can get decent sound from a $200 pair of bookshelfs. But a $200 pair of in-walls, will not sound as good. IMO Something to think about.

Thanks for the reply. For a decent setup, nothing earth shattering, how much should I expect to spend - lets say for a 5.1 setup, sans sub. I'll increase to a 7.1 in years to come.

I just installed a pair of HTD HD-W80 from (HTD.com) in wall speakers and they sound great. They are 2-Way 8" speakers. It is 160 for a pair. I was skeptical at first, my brother-in-law got some first and I liked his so I got some and I am not sorry. No more bulky speakers taking up floor space. I wouldnt mind bulky speakers If I had a dedicated theater, but my HT is part of my living room and the dogs kept hitting my speakers. I will eventually get all HD-W80 inwalls for my center and 4 surrounds. BTW, HTD has the best customer service I have ever dealt with.

Forgot to mention, my brother-in-law also bought the HTD Panel speaker which also sounds very good for such a small speaker. HTD has some quality products, they also have inexpensive accessories.

Just goes to show that everyone has different tastes and opinions. That's why you need to go audition for yourself.

If you're looking for in-wall speakers on a shoestring budget, you might want to check out Parts Express. A pair of their in-walls with 6.5" woofers are on sale for $49 a pair. They don't offer a center channel model, so you'd have to get an additional pair and use a single one for the center channel.

I've had some of their in-walls in the past. Granted, they were a more costly 3-way model with an 8" woofer. But, they were made well and sounded good for the cost.

While going with in-wall speakers may mean some sacrifices in sound, there are some additional steps that you could take to ensure better sound. HiFiForLess.com has a large number of in-wall speakers for almost any budget. They also have accessories for in-wall speakers, too. Acoustic foam that is meant to be installed behind the in-wall speakers only runs about $22 for a pair at that site. I think if you do your homework and be a little creative, you can get some sound that will satisfy you.

For me, it's quite a gap between movie sound and having a pair of speakers that your use for more critical music listening. The 5 speakers used for movies should please many people since you'll probably cross them over at 80Hz and let the sub do the heavy bass work.
