Hey MDS, good luck on your hunt. Every few years I get that itch for a new car (but never do) and I did test drive a number of cars early this year. It happened when I saw my first 135 in a parking lot, and I then I picked mperct's brain a bit while I was at it. During the past 6 years or so, I at one point wanted an Acura CL, Sub WRX, Honda S2000, even a Golf, lol. Somehow I keep talking myself into staying with my '98 Ranger. One day I will have power seats, power mirrors, power windows, interior lights, hehe.
So this year, for BMW, I test drove 128, 135, 335. I hate financing as well, but the rates are very, very good these days, and since you are looking for a 4-door, it should even be better. Basically, these days, it's between 0.9 to 3.9%, and you ALSO might get your first two payments paid for free. (Better chances when you have a higher rate, like 3.9).
I'm not sure if you can find such things near you, but the best deals on BMW, by far, are "executive demo's". They will be significantly cheaper than the pre-certifieds, have less miles, and more options. The newer models all seem to use run-flat tires, and they are very expensive to replace. The $1000 5yr tire/wheel warranty is something to consider, as someone I know swears by it.
I also test drove a couple of Audi's. The most expensive car, just for chit n giggles, was a used S5. Stiffest clutch I've ever experienced. The interior was even nicer than I was expecting, but I hate the gadgetry of certain things, particularly the e-brake. I definitely was not left with a feeling that this car was reliable. Screamed money pit.
I also test drove a G37 S, and while I do know Infiniti has extremely high customer satisfaction, this car couldn't get my heart pumping as fast as the bimmers, even with 330 HP. OK, actually it was pretty even, but just not as much heart pumping as the 135, which I find to be a rocket ship. Just feels like one. The clutch wasn't as smooth either, IMO, but never having owned a stick vehicle, there's something to be said for lack of familiarity.
I know you're looking for an automatic. That surely will give you a MUCH bigger selection (as I've browsed AutoTrader, Carmax, Cars Direct, etc). But, again, if you're looking for BMW, try finding an executive demo. They are, by far, the best deals. As in: half the miles, thousands of dollars less, twice the options.
I've always liked Lexus and Acura, but the former sometimes feels like a "boat" in its handling, and the latter feels sportier, but I dunno if I can get myself to buy FWD. Is a Probe FWD?
Happy driving!
edit: congrats aberkowitz!
