Just bought a new car today- volvo S40. Actually, the first car that I've ever had the opportunity to buy new :D! Having lived in the NYC area for most of my post-college life (with the exception of 2 MBA years in Chicago where I drove an old Landrover I bought off my parents for $2) I've never had the opportunity to own new car of my own. Gotta say- it's a pretty awesome feeling!

Hey MDS, good luck on your hunt. Every few years I get that itch for a new car (but never do) and I did test drive a number of cars early this year. It happened when I saw my first 135 in a parking lot, and I then I picked mperct's brain a bit while I was at it. During the past 6 years or so, I at one point wanted an Acura CL, Sub WRX, Honda S2000, even a Golf, lol. Somehow I keep talking myself into staying with my '98 Ranger. One day I will have power seats, power mirrors, power windows, interior lights, hehe.

So this year, for BMW, I test drove 128, 135, 335. I hate financing as well, but the rates are very, very good these days, and since you are looking for a 4-door, it should even be better. Basically, these days, it's between 0.9 to 3.9%, and you ALSO might get your first two payments paid for free. (Better chances when you have a higher rate, like 3.9).

I'm not sure if you can find such things near you, but the best deals on BMW, by far, are "executive demo's". They will be significantly cheaper than the pre-certifieds, have less miles, and more options. The newer models all seem to use run-flat tires, and they are very expensive to replace. The $1000 5yr tire/wheel warranty is something to consider, as someone I know swears by it.

I also test drove a couple of Audi's. The most expensive car, just for chit n giggles, was a used S5. Stiffest clutch I've ever experienced. The interior was even nicer than I was expecting, but I hate the gadgetry of certain things, particularly the e-brake. I definitely was not left with a feeling that this car was reliable. Screamed money pit.

I also test drove a G37 S, and while I do know Infiniti has extremely high customer satisfaction, this car couldn't get my heart pumping as fast as the bimmers, even with 330 HP. OK, actually it was pretty even, but just not as much heart pumping as the 135, which I find to be a rocket ship. Just feels like one. The clutch wasn't as smooth either, IMO, but never having owned a stick vehicle, there's something to be said for lack of familiarity.

I know you're looking for an automatic. That surely will give you a MUCH bigger selection (as I've browsed AutoTrader, Carmax, Cars Direct, etc). But, again, if you're looking for BMW, try finding an executive demo. They are, by far, the best deals. As in: half the miles, thousands of dollars less, twice the options.

I've always liked Lexus and Acura, but the former sometimes feels like a "boat" in its handling, and the latter feels sportier, but I dunno if I can get myself to buy FWD. Is a Probe FWD?

Happy driving!

edit: congrats aberkowitz!

Jostenmeat,

The IS series doesn't feel like a boat, and I urge you to try one out for yourself.

VW Rabbit. 2.5L I-5 engine; sounds almost like it's bigger V-10 brother in the Lambo. It's sweet. :D And, it's only $16k IIRC.

Or you could get a "new to you" good used Neon.... :D

I-5? I thought they were I-4s.

I saw a Genesis coupe for the first time last night. That car is dead sexy just standing still. It looks like a million bucks and the seats look extremely comfortable. I'm going to have to start going to dealerships when they're open so the sales people will let me inside the cars. It's too bad that the Genesis couple doesn't get the 4.6L V8 that's available in the sedan. That would be a rockin' combination.

Oh, and the Genesis sedan looked very boring in comparison to the coupe but I'm sure the 375 Hp could make up for that.

Seriously, I have no life.
I've had my '94 Probe GT since 1994 and it was reliable for about the first 9-10 years. The last few years it has cost me roughly $1500 per year to fix and keep running. Still cheaper than dropping $25-$35K for a new car.I had intended to wait until around September when my insurance expires to buy a new car but I think today's episode is the final straw that breaks the camel's back.

I went tile shopping and just as I got to within 1.5 miles from home, the car overheated and shut down completely. This is not the first time that has happened but the last time it was the distributor that died. At least the car is polite enough to wait until I am within walking distance of home before it dies.

Assuming it cools down and I can walk back to it and get it started, I think I'm going car shopping TOMORROW. :)

Any owners of Acura TLs? I like the looks of the car but have never driven one. That is at the top of my list.

Have you consulted the April issue of Consumer Reports? Reliable, luxury cars are in it:)

Well then that eliminates your Acura recommendation.

And just for people who don't know about this car. I figure I'd post it for your viewing pleasure.

I never recommended Acura. Well then there goes your reading comprehension.

Typical Hyundai, Copying everyone and putting out their own product. So many cues for the LS460 it's not even funny.

MDS is one of my favorite members because when I first got here he was right
about everything and pretty patient ... unlike me: mostly wrong and cranky. :D
