I have a brand new (year 2010) Dell Inspiron laptop computer , and a (year 2009) Yamaha receiver. My TV is a Sony but it is from (year 2003) and is a rear projection TV 65". I know there has got to be a way to hook these together so I can start watching Netflix and such from my computer on my TV. Please help me figure this out! I can give model numbers from all the components if needed.

Great, thanks for the replies! This is great. I had a feeling I needed the hdmi to dvi cable and the hdmi cables. But the other 2 things you said I have no clue what they are. So, what will I do with those?

You may not need the other two. I have to look at the HDMI implementation on the Yamaha...

Please let me know if there is any other information I can give to help out. I really appreciate this, for I have been trying for months to get this to work with no avail. Even my techie friends who told me they could probably do it, cannot get it to work.

Are you sure the yamaha receiver will be able to convert it through the hdmi and dvi cables?

The DVI to HDMI adapter will plug into the back of your TV. All your cables will be HDMI. Short answer is yes.

Also, I currently have an hdmi cable that I have plugged up to my laptop and then to my receiver. Then, from the receiver I have tried Monster Cables to the TV. I cannot get video this way on the TV. Why? And when I plug it up that way the screen on my laptop goes black. I can get audio but I cannot get it to show up on the TV and the laptop screen goes black. Shouldnt this setup work?

Read the owners help for the laptop. There may be a key combination on the laptop that you have to hit (mirror display, external display, or two displays).

There is nothing about it in the owners manual that came with the laptop.

Dell has told me that this situation is impossible, but I know there has to be a way.

Because they are telling me with the age of my TV without the hdmi input, that it cannot be done.

....this is the whole reason I found this forum, signed up and posted about this.
