I cannot. I dont have that type of equipment, yet. Its what I hear though.

Yep. Before and after measurements showed that my corner traps helped with the primary null in my room. Peaks are easy to EQ down.

What is some good EQ software for a newbie?

You can combine measurement with some eq by using a measurement mic (like a miniDSP UMIK or a Dayton USB mic or a few others) along with software like REW....which can also help determine and implement eq. What's the rest of your gear you have to work with? Probably something from miniDSP for implementing the eq would work.
