Dolby Surround and Dolby Enabled speakers force processing in main left and right speakers?

The Onkyo TX-NR6100 did not have a listening mode for Dolby Digital Plus when an Atmos(DD+ based) input signal was provided. The Denon receivers do give a Dolby Digital Plus listening mode along with the Atmos listening mode. You can directly compare going back and forth between listening modes, and see how the Atmos additional channels affect the soundstage.

Yeah on my newest Denon it tends to go into the Atmos sound mode even though I don't have Atmos speakers....would prefer it not do that, but...

Wait, I haven't bought one in years, but you still always have the option to hear the content in its original native format, right? Or am i missing something?

That was my assumption based on previous Denons. Sort of like how DTS with some avrs will automatically play in 7ch rather than the existing 5 in a particular recording (at one point that didn't happen either). If you change sources/codecs frequently its kind of frustrating (if you simply play the same codec all the time it can rely on last use somewhat).

When I had a 7.1 setup with Back surround speakers and no Atmos speakers, with the TX-NR6100, if the source was an Atmos soundtrack, then the only available listening mode was Atmos, no Dolby Digital Plus. It's even stated that Atmos won't play in the Dolby Digital Plus format in Onkyo's manual sound mode to audio in, charts. You simply don't have the DD+ sound mode option.

The Denon does have the DD+ sound mode option with Atmos soundtracks and it's even stated in the Denon's Manual sound mode to audio in, charts.

If you do get the base DD+ soundtrack it will be 5.1 as the rear channels supposedly hold the Atmos meta data. So the only way to get a 7.1 soundtrack is to use the Atmos soundtrack meta data.
