I don't like all the ads on the left, they are very distracting. I liked the layout of the old site better where the menu was on the left side of the page. This layout almost makes me think that the menus are ads!

...However, I was very glad to see the system recommendation updates!

Imho...

Nice job! I like the drop down search by category on home page. Speed is very good; using Comcast High Speed & Firefox. Overall very easy on the eyes and well organized.

A moderate time puttering about yields the following:

Definite errors

1. The blue menu bar is not thick enough, as evidenced by the fact that the bottom of any 'p's and 'y's are cut off.

2. At present, if you select 'Tips and Tricks' from the blue menu, the drop down falls behind the advertisement instead of in front.

3. When moving the mouse down over another menu item, but where the cursor travels over the tool tip text, the menu closes and you have to select it again.

Redundancy/Logic

1. Given how lovely and clear and simple the new blue menu bar is, is there really any significant need for the tan coloured bar beneath it with its 'Topical Links'? This could be removed and the search function placed in the blue menu at the far right hand side.

2. In the 'Choose a subsection' menu, is there a need for the 'Go' button given that when you select something you're automatically taken there anyway?

3. Reviews should be professional by default. Therefore, there's no need for the word 'Pro' in 'Pro Reviews'.

4. Equipment reviews etc. should be higher in importance to the site than the forum. Therefore, the latter should be shunted along to the 'end', i.e. the right hand side of the blue menu bar.

General comments

Overall, I agree with others that the new home page looks and feels more modern and polished than the existing. I really like the blue menu bar and also like the 'You are here'-tree in which you can easily jump back to a previous level, but feel that the tan coloured menu in between these is redundant and could easily be scrapped, with the search function incorporated into the main menu.

Is there really a need for the 'tool tip text' that appears when you hover the mouse over an item in the blue menu bar? Let's face it; 99% of folk who're browsing will not take the time to read the (well-intended) words but will try the menu item and if it's not what they're looking for, will simply press the back button.

I'm saddened by the very large increase in coverage for advertisments and immensely dislike having them on both sides, thereby 'boxing' in the site's own material which, at the end of the day, is what visitors are really here to see. Boxing in, in particular strikes a chord because the first thing readers' eyes will fall upon will be advertisements, given that the overwhelming majority will read from left to right.

If the overhead banner was removed altogether, the blue menu bar moved up to be placed right beneath the Audioholics logo and advertisments placed only on the right hand side, I feel that the site would look far cleaner/even more modern than at present.

Im not trying to pick apart your post but i did want to say that the advertisements are something that i like to see,for me seeing a snappy advert with a cool pic makes me want to visit the manufacturers site & read up on the item that caught my eye in the first place.

Hi Robbie,

The forum has member reviews so I think it makes sense to use "Pro Reviews".

Take care,

Here are pics from how it appears first with ads and second without the top ad bar.

(Click for Bigger)
I like the site without the top ad bar, but it looks bare without the side ads.

I click on a lot more ads on this site than any other site, so I don't mind them, but a few get in the way.

It looks a lot nicer and "cleaner" to navigate without the top ads. Good call!

It only looks bare due to the amount of white space the eye perceives. Fill the white space and that will vanish.

Updated comments:

I was reading the latest HSU sub review and noticed that the article was just one very thin, long column. In addition, the text alternated between the normal font and another very large, bold, and italicized one. In short, not very easy on the eyes.

I did notice an increase in speed, however.

::Ducks:: I liked the layout of the old site better. Sure its missing drop down menus but I find it to be more appealing. The blue bar looks like a out of the box builder site layout. The old site had small graphics for each part of the site, thats unique and cool to me.
::Still ducking::

* I like the "You Are Here" bread crumb feature. Very useful.

* I'm happy not to see the context-sensitive text link ads that were interspersed in the article on the old site. I was not a big fan of those.

* When viewed at 1024x768 resolution, the space for actual content is dwarfed by the ads. On higher resolutions it looks nice though.

* The top menu bar navigation does not seem to work at all in Opera. In 1024x768 (in Firefox), the top menu drop down for Pro Reviews is longer than the screen. There seems to be some extra space in there so maybe it can be trimmed down.

* I like the navigation improvement within the reviews (being able to jump to different pages by label instead of just page number).

* I don't really like the new search feature. Ajax (or whatever it's using) has its place but it seems like it is being used just for the sake of using it. I realize you can just hit enter or Search, but the pop-up is kind of distracting (and runs the search twice and causes delay). If you want to run a search, I'd think it's more useful to just display the full results list - actually the results when you do that differ from those in the pop-up. It seems like most people like the new search though so ... :)

Speed: pretty fast
Navigation: not bad (easy enough for me)
Font: I hate it. Not the easiest to read.

yup

speed is good... never been a problem btw... but the layout looks weird... I'm feeling lost a bit... to much colors and ads here and there

I'm viewing the page @ 1024x768

Saw the pic without the top ad tho... and looks cleaner and way easier to navigate

Looking good. One comment about the overall site "banner" space. How much do we *need* 3 inches of every page dedicated to banner material.

Don't mind being "boxed in" by the ads. Come to expect that really.... But PLEASE please look into thinning the top "logo" banner. I realize that each item that makes up the ~3 inches of banner is important, but please look into styling them as thin as possible. That will give more "1st glance" (aka no scrolling) material per page.

Perhaps moving the "pursing the truth in audio and video" over to replace "Let our rigorous testing and reviews be your guidelines to A/V equipment—not marketing slogans".

Also, the "logo" banner's rendering breaks down at 800xXXX resolution in both Firefox and IE. (minor issue)

Just a thought.

New site

I checked out the new site and read the review of the Axiom M60's, which I didn't see posted on the main site.
No problems opening the pages (over DSL) and I don't miss the side navigation, but a larger top navigation bar might be nice and would look less like a generic windows program.

When trying to read the review, I found the adds flashing on both sides to be a little distracting.

so far the only thing I really don't like is the ad's flanking both sides of the page. In some spots ad space ends up using more screen space than the actual article content, that's off putting to me. I know you have to pay the bills to keep audioholics expanding, but that particular ad layout is very distracting to me, but I'll admit, I can get distracted easy. Speedwise, pretty good, 1-2 sec's per page.
