No, this isn't from "The Onion".

You are not reading the article very carefully. According to the article, she rented the video 9 years ago. There is NOTHING saying that she could go to jail for 9 years.

I used to have a boss's boss's boss who liked to say, "Anybody with half a brain would think xxx... What do you think, Herb?". One day in a meeting w/ a bunch of execs, I was proposing a particular action. My big boss disagreed and used the phrasing above. I was a bit feisty then, and replied, "You're right Ed. Anybody with half a brain would think xxx. But anybody with a whole brain would realize yyy."

Saw this story about the woman going to jail on our local ABC NEWS this morning.

Some time ago, I had to pay for two VHS tapes that I thought I had returned., but were reported lost. Eventually, I found the under the seat of my car: Chopper Chicks in Zombie Town and the Toxic Avenger. Of the two, I'd pick the Toxic Avenger. Just found out there was a sequel and that they made it into a musical. I'll have to check them out. You go Melvin the mop boy.
