FYI about pricing - HMV Japan is the way to go right now because they are much cheaper. It has been noticed by others too that Amazon UK has dropped there pricing too - so perhaps (and hoping) the original prices shown are not the final price, we shall see. I agree at $40 is a bit expensive. I pre-ordered mine from Japan, $115 including shipping for the box set (11 discs).

Great new interview with Nick Davis at the link below:

You're obviously a newbie and NOT familiar with this site to make such a moronic statement.

Could it be I interviewed Steve Hackett because I am:
  • a huge Genesis fan
  • had the opportunity
  • consider it 1 step closer to interviewing the current band before they tour over the summer
That's not very nice!
I may be a newbie, but I am NOT a moron.

Map;

It was a joke and you came off very offensively while also violating our forum rules about questioning our intent or ethics.

http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/faq.php

If you spend anytime on our site you will discover two things:
1. we have no vested interest in any music band or the music industry of that matter
2. we have very content rich articles relating to hometheater and write about music related stuff for fun

Hi. I like your site very much. I've been looking at it at least once a day for the last year and a half. I didn't realize you guys are such serious Genesis heads. :) I plan on checking out their new sacd's to see what I have been missing.
BTW Acoustic Sounds has the individual discs for $40 each.

Even though I do detect some sarcasm in you post;) Check out another post on the SACD's here : http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28734

HMV UK has got a great price on them, and so does/did HMV Japan. I think the prices may come down from the $40 on the individuals. Also, each album comes with a bonus video disc with a butload of nice stuff on them.

If you go for the box set, it is a 12 disc set, so I am told. Not bad for the price, not bad at all considering what they are dishin' out!

Actually, no sarcasm was implied. Amazon.com has the individual discs for $58. In that case, $40 is not that bad. Go figure!
Thanks for the link.

Okay, no problem! I started the other link trying to explain what you get for your money, but really haven't done any updating to it. It seems that pricing is all over the board. Also, I guess the boxsets are to be 12 discs, not the 11 that I had originally posted. To bad I don't have time to update this stuff! Oh well.

Mike

Edit: Amazon.com is off the radar at $58, even if it is an SACD/DVD 2 disc set. Hopefully, pricing comes down to reality, or Genesis record companys might be sitting on some inventory that won't move. Wouldn't be good for future 'Live' recordings to be released.

Well I think I am the only staff member of Audioholics that is such a Genesis Fan, but since I am the owner, my vote carries considerably more weight than the rest of the Audioholics staff :D

It is rumored now that there will be a press conference in New York city on March 7th that will announce the North American leg of the Genesis tour.
Mar 7 was the original date told that the SACD's would be released.. but that date is around late Mar, early April depending on what sites you go to.

Good news, hope it's true!

Agreed. I've always lamented that I never got to see these guys live. Seeing The Musical Box was amazing, but it would have been nice to see the real guys.

Early April can't come too soon for me! Can't wait to pop those SACDs in and relax into Genesis nirvana! I'm aching (men's feet) just thinking about it!

cheers,

I did get to see them live, albeit post-Gabriel, in Vancouver on the "Seconds Out" tour. Chester Thompson played drums along with Phil. Just about perfect sound, and amazing lighting for the time, using a large number of overhead aircraft landing lights for power, plus lasers and, of course, dry ice smoke. (Pink Floyd's lights on their last tour beat everyone else's, ever, hands down, Genesis lights were top-notch at the time.)

It was a great night, one of the best rock concerts I recall. Phil and Chester did a dual drum solo, pretty much all of my favorites got played, and Phil actually cared enough about the audience that he got those in front to sit down so everyone else could sit down. It didn't last that long, but it showed a concern lacking in most other acts. Phil's tamborine solo where he plays it on various parts of his body was great, and you can only wonder what is happening listening to the LP.

You can pretty much hear what we heard on the "Seconds Out" double LP. Sure would be nice to hear that in surround, but it's not in this new release set, and is some of their best work at the time. I've still got my vintage LPs. Wish I'd also seen them with Peter Gabriel.

I'm not sure I'd want to hear a live album in surround sound. Well, I guess it depends on the way it's done. I recently listened to Peter Gabriel's Growing Up Live DVD and his Still Growing Up Live DVD, and I really don't like his implementation of surround for concerts. When it comes to implementing surround sound for studio music, he has the music coming at you from all sides, as if you're surrounded by the musicians. I love it. His DVD Play and his SACD Up are stellar examples of surround sound music.

But when it comes to concerts, I find I want the sound to come primarily from the front, as if I'm in the audience, and all the music is coming toward me from direction. But Peter doesn't do that. He seems to treat it like it's a studio album: he'll have backing vocals come from the surrounds, or one particular guitar coming from a surround. It doesn't recreate the concert experience for me.

A stereo presentation of concert footage seems fine, with left and right channels, plus a sort of phantom centre channel. Not much else needed. Maybe some audience sounds from the surrounds, but that's about it.

But o how I envy you, newdreams! Seeing Genesis live during my favourite era! Seconds Out is a terrific live album, and I can't even imagine how mind-blowing it must have been being there. Sigh. You're just whetting my appetite for when the lads come to North America!

I too wish I could have seen Genesis live with Peter. But that will likely never happen again. If you get a chance, go see The Musical Box perform. They "do" Genesis authentically, and even got rave reviews from all five Genesis members! I had chills, every time I saw them. Truly incredible.

cheers,

I respectfully disagree with you, supervij. I experienced personally both "Growing Up" and "Still GU" concerts, and that's how the sound came at you, in surround form (esp. in a "GU" tour, when the stage was in a middle of arena). So, that was a mix intended for the venue (and received by its audience), not only for the DVD later !
And the concert audio disc in surround CAN BE GREAT and can represent well what was really happening. The best example of which would be: Roger Waters "In the Flesh Live" M/C SACD !!! Compare it to DVD from that concert and to the personal experience from that tour (if you had any) ... TRULY AMAZING !!!!

Yep all seems good with the exception of the sh*t hitting the fan at the official site! I think so many are jumping to conclusion without really knowing the official details of what to expect with the new site and forum etc.

True, but we have been told stuff that certainly sounds concrete, and from what we were told, it doesn't sound promising. They need our credit card number to participate in the forum?! And thirty-five bucks (US) for the chance to get pre-sale tickets? Not to get pre-sale tickets, but the chance to get them. Are they smoking crack?

I'll go the TicketMaster route, personally. And there's always newsgroups and other free forums to chat about Genesis.

Disappointing, to say the least. But I'm hoping they'll back-peddle a bit when they see how upset the forum members are.

cheers,

Yes sir, they most certainly have back-peddled! Tony Smith (G Manager) got involved, and put a statement on the site as well. Someone else made a statement to.
Now on with our regular programming!

And I'm glad they did! But they've still got that $35 registration for pre-sales, don't they? I'm undecided about this. I'm against it on principle, but having never seen the lads live, I reeeeeeally want to get good seats for me and my gal. So I'm kinda tempted to pay the $35. Sigh. I dunno.

It sounds like they have a plan to wave the $35 for existing forum members (if you want to use the new forum only). Still, if you want the opportunity to get tickets prior to them going on sale to the general public, you'll will have to pay the $35 from what I gather.
Let's see - I am anticipating buying concert tickets, and then the box set coming in April. Then another in June/July, and another in the fall. My wife is going to kill me!
