I don't agree w/Gene on this one. I think "We Can't Dance" is okay (the kind of cd I'd burn from a friend, but wouldn't spend a dollar on. It does nothing to me (especially the closing of I Can't Dance with Collins singing "I can't dance, he can't dance..." I find it embarrasing)
Yeah I to say this about that song.
I was thinking more on the lines of Lonely Man in the Corner, Mama, Oh Lord, etc...
not the pop type songs.

And when I say etc. I really mean etc... They did some great songs.............

Which song is "Oh Lord"? You don't mean "In the Air Tonight", do you?

But I agree on "Mama" and "Man on the Corner" -- those are actually my two favourite Phil-era Genesis songs. (Although "Second Home by the Sea" done live and "The Brazilian" is always fun too, but those are instrumentals.)

And I can't imagine Phil going up to Mike and Tony and trying to convince them to "sell out". If you listen to those albums in sequence, I think you'll see that there's a very natural progression from fantasy, prog rock to more accessible pop. A Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering were classic Genesis albums, very much in the vein of Gabriel-era stuff. But W&W featured a gorgeous romantic song called "Afterglow", written by Tony, not Phil. With ...and then there were three... they consciously tried to write much shorter, accessible songs -- and many of them still had a "fantasy" element. They had two hit singles from this album: "Follow You Follow Me" and "Many Too Many" -- both of which are romantic songs, the first of which was written by all three, and the second written by Tony. ATTWT was written before Phil ever considered doing his first solo album, cos his wife hadn't left him yet! So personally, I think they were already on the road to becoming more mainstream and more pop-oriented by the time of Duke.

But that's just my opinion.

EDIT: Whew! I think I may have come off sounding like someone from one of those boards johndoe mentioned! :p

How do you find music fun....like, describe what you mean by this? I've never heard it call that before. lol it makes me think of someone playing with music on a swing-set or having music put its lips on their belly and blowing making a farting noise.......

Actually he doesn't do that on the studio album but does on the live version. I agree I hate when he improvises lyrics like that and becomes repetitively annoying.

Probably my all time favorite album of theirs is Seconds Out which IMO is when they peaked musically. Nobody in rock put on a live show like them IMO.

Opps your right. I forgot since I don't have that one

My bad, I have listened to that song at least 1,000 times. And I knew/know the name. But Oh Lord always sticks with me. Or just say the famous Miami Vice song ;)

And yeah when I said etc.. I really meant it. Heck, I could put up a list of at least 50 songs that were superb from them....

Sorry Rob....

Wow, u got to be kidding. I would have thought you may be a tad into Genesis type man????

Hmm, shows what I know.

EDIT:: What I mean is Genesis was certainly musical goodness.
Man, they rocked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Granted I was more of a Collins listener.
But Peter G. was great as well, and had some decent solo stuff....
Rocked compared to LZ?
Rocked compared to DP?
Rocked compared to The Who?
Rocked compared to Boston?
Me,i wouldnt use rocked and Genesis in the same sentence. Imo,they were a bit more of a softer band.

I was kinda wondering why you even bothered reposting. Since you stated I'm with you, on the fact that you could do without Genesis.

Anyway, clearly you never found Genesis to rock. So I won't even bother on replying to the bands that you posted. Just know this, I listen to just about everything. I have a very open mind when it comes to music.

Also funny that you quoted me on that entire statement, when it was directed at Rob. Hmm, I'm sure this thread is not destined for the steam vent..

Anyhow, Yeah Rob whats up with that?? I really thought you had a open mind to almost all groups???
No biggy though.;)

What do I mean by music that is fun? Hmmm . . . I'm not sure exactly. I guess that the music makes me feel good, has a great beat, and rocks out at least a little bit. To my ears and my sensibilities, both "The Brazillian" and most live versions of "Second Home by the Sea" do these three things. Different for everyone, I suppose.

I'll sound really anal saying this, but what the heck: "In the Air Tonight" is a Phil Collins solo song, not a Genesis song. A lot of people don't make much distinction between Genesis songs and Phil's solo stuff, though, which I suppose is just down to him being the singer of the group.

On a side note, a friend of mine made a VHS copy (which is probably a copy of a copy of a copy, etc.) of an old Genesis concert from 1972/73. I had a chance last night to listen only to the first song, which was "Watcher of the Skies". The audio quality is horrible; if the whole tape is the same as the first song, it's almost unintelligable -- unless you know the songs inside and out, like I do. It was pretty cool seeing Genesis performing this song. I can't wait to watch the rest of the tape tonight! Does anyone know of any VHS/DVD concerts from the Gabriel era that have been commercially released?

cheers,
supervij

I understand perfectly when you describe some music as Fun. Probably my all time most favorite 'Fun' song is Amos Moses by Jerry Reed. You can't help but smile when you hear it - it is clever and funny.

Rather than describe what Fun means to me in terms of music, think of what is definitely NOT fun (RAP) and contrast. I pulled up next to a car the other day and the 'music' the guy was playing had one lyric - 'F...All That' repeated ad nauseum layered on the same motonous repeated 4 beats. Now there's real talent for you...

It's worth mentioning that Collins doesn't play the drums on Seconds Out. It's Chester Thompson for the most part, and Bill Bruford, both drumming legends.

I'm bored. Maybe we have different opinions on what rocked means. I did like PC but talk about radio overkill and he put out cd's with the same songs. Maybe a reunion would make them fresh again and i would give them a try again. I'm openminded.

Great show, great album. You are correct, this is when they peaked musically. Without SH's influence, they just got too conservative and headed toward prog/pop. It took awhile...

Genesis always put on great shows, but the Gabriel era was unique for it's surreal visual stories. PC was a great frontman, but not in the league of the charisma, dance, costumes and visual presentation of PG. They became a band, prior to that it was performance art. I'd like to see Musical Box. I looked at a couple of trailers on their website. Very cool, but still not the same. For a taste of what PG was like, check out his '93 DVD "Secret World". No costumes and makeup, but you get a glimpse. Great performance and DVD, too.

Yes but note how great the drums were when Collins stepped up during instrumentals to supplement Chester. Bill Bruford was only on one song which I think was Firth or Fifth. I have little respect left for Bill since his drumming after the early 80's leaves much to be desired and I heard he has a crappy attitude from a rowdy that used to tour with Yes.

supervij,

I also have seen The Musical Box. The are remarkable. These guys have got to be in the top 3 or so if not the best, in the world. I went to San Francisco last Dec. to see them perform 'The Lamb'. They played with perfection and such attention to detail. I took a friend who had no clue about 'those' Genesis days with PG. He didn't know the music, but was stunned with the performance and now of course, he is an avid listener. Oh, they did The Musical Box and Watcher of the Skies as an encore. I think they are licensed through 2006 to do the Lamb and then thats it!
Okay, about the video stuff. I have several boots on DVD of early stuff. I have a boot that got transfered straight from the 16mm real. EXCELLENT stuff.
Send your address to mike.eckhardt@verizon.net and I can get a dvd to you.

About the 'Video Show' DVD. The video's are what they are, you can't change the quality. But wow, the sound?? It's the best I think I have heard right up there with Dark Side of the Moon!

Mike

PS Would love to see them do a reunion, and release those SACD's!

My first post:

Nice site ya got here.

Concerning a Genesis Reunion...
I'd love to see the boys get back together.

They're older now, a little less hair but I'm sure the music would maintain its integrity.

Genesis certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea but..."I know what I like and I like what I know."

I'm sure they were talented, but vocally both Gabriel and Collins are extremely annoying, IMOHO. I'm a prog fan, to be sure, but I liked ELP, Asia, Yes, etc a lot better. Nowadays, to tell the truth, I'd rather listen to edgier prog like Dream Theatre, Porcupine Tree and Magnitude 9. Something with some 'balls.':D

You're right, Mike, The Musical Box is awesome! I've seen their tours for Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. All of them were incredible. My favourite had to be a Montreal show of SEbtP from a few years back. There was so much classic material for them to play there. I remember encore after encore too! I got to meet the lead singer (can't remember his name at the moment) at the wrap party too! He was so exhausted that all he could do was thank people for coming to the show, then he sat in the corner and closed his eyes for a long time!

I don't know if I'd put the surround mixes on The Video Show in the same league as DSotM. I didn't feel the songs really opened up as much as songs on Dark Side, didn't "breathe" as easily. Dark Side took full advantage of surround sound by placing certain sounds and instruments in certain spatial locations. The Video Show sounded to me halfway between that and stereo versions played on DPL. Some songs were terrific on surround, but some were just okay. Yeah, the video quality is what it is, lots being mid 80s and earlier, so I'm not complaining about that. But the surround, in my opinion, could have been a little bit more interesting. Great DTS sound, though, no doubt.

Sent you an e-mail, by the way, Mike. And thanks!

cheers,
supervij

Gene,
I agree, Collins was an amazing drummer, I was just stating a fact. Also, in regards to Bruford's attitude, Robert Fripp of all people called him "Mr Grumpy". I'm not familiar with Bruford's Earthworks, Bruford, etc jazz bands at all; I think the drumming in the 80's "reformed" King Crimson albums is fantastic, but the work he did later with ABWH is blah to okay. I know he recently dropped electronic drums altogether, but I haven't heard any music yet.
