Preppers use CB/SW radios and those can use batteries for power- it's probably time to look into getting one, if the current problems continue.
As much as people have tried to avoid being dependent on others, many need to think about the fact that safety in numbers is real and that cooperation among people in groups will be needed- gathering wood, hunting, growing/harvesting crops and providing basic medical services will be needed if the SHTF in a big way.
For those who know how, making power won't be impossible- car alternators can be rotated using human, air or water power and with the number of cars that won't be drivable, batteries will be widely available.
