Does anyone have any thougths on the Focal CC800 or the bookshelf 807V? I need to use bookshelf speakers due to spouse acceptance and need thougths. Planning on buying new amp in the $1000-1,500 range (possibly Yamaha RX2700 or Dennon HVR 2807). Any thougths on bookshelf speakers in the $750-$1000 range?

Onix Ref 1's

I have the Onix Ref 1's and recommend them. The real rosewood veneer gives them a high WAF rating. Also available in piano black and bird's eye maple finishes. They retail for $1500 but show up regularly in the form or b-stock section for $5-600. AV123.com is moving their headquarters so new speakers are out of stock at the moment.

A pair or for a full set (5.1/6.1/7.1)? Including a sub or not? How big is your room?

My system is composed of the Focal.JMlab Chorus S line, which has been discontinued. I have the 726S fronts, the CC700S center and 705S bookshelves as my surrounds.

Personally, I love them. Some people have said that the Focal speakers are a little bit laid back, or too 'polite', and I guess I can understand what they mean. They definitely aren't an in your face type of speaker. Regardless, they sound amazing and present themselves well. They are equally capable in terms of music and home theater use. My only complaint against any of the speakers is that the 726s are a little weak on bass, I expected slightly more for their size, but I will eventually add a subwoofer, so that's not an issue. I have absolutely no complaints about the center or bookshelves.

Now, I would have to say speakers I'm most impressed with in the set are the bookshelves. They are definitely not to be underestimated. They sound so much bigger than the little speakers they are. Sure, they don't have quite the bass extension that the 726S has, but that doesn't mean they don't perform. The ones you are thinking about, the 807, have a larger driver, so they will have a slightly deeper response.

If you haven't auditioned them yet, then by all means do so. You shouldn't even consider buying a speaker until you've heard it. Ideally, you should also listen to some other speakers in the same price range to compare. This is something that I didn't do before I bought the Focals, but I don't regret it. I've heard and seen other speakers since then in the same price range, and I think my money was extremely well spent.

Just my $0.02.
