1) Yes

2a) 6'
2b) I will need a 15' HDMI cable to complete my Home Theater system, but I am still waiting to purchase a Yamaha RX-V2600.
2c) I am not sure, but i would estimate there are installations that require up to 50' of cable.

3) No

4) This really depends on the quality of the components being installed and the room configuration. I would estimate around 10% of the total system cost should be cables, wires, ect...

1. Yes, DVI/HDMI are included in any plans for Home Theater.

2a. Hard to say, as it depends on things like rack/cabinet placement and projector/display placement. Unfortunately, longer runs seem to be necessary in most cases. 10m may be too short in some cases.

2b. I've used 8m/26ft successfully, although I would have preferred a longer run if an affordable cable was available.

2c. I'd say 20m to be safe.

3. Sometimes through conduit, but I wouldn't say it is a frequent requirement.

4. As low as possible budget for cables. Good cables are good cables in my opinion, and just making sure the gauge is good enough, the cable has been tested and verified for the required length and purpose, and the connectors won't fall off is all I'm looking for.

1) Yeah, for me I have to have HDMI included in my thinking. It's the only way to go.

2) 10 feet is the typical length I've purchased, the max I've used was with a buddy... 25 feet. 8 Feet would be the in reality necessary max.

3) No

4) 25%

1. they will be the next time my video source changes.
2.typically use 2m run. may need upwards of 20 foot for projector install. Used successfully a 3m run. All component video.
3. never had to snake through conduit before.

1. Yes I purchased a HDMI capable PJ and DVD player for my HT room and my STB is DVI enabled.

2. My run is 45' from the back of my room to the front, I needed at least 40' but went with 45' just in case. So far the run I am using is ok for me.

3. My cables are run through the ceiling and then into conduit down the wall and back into the HT.

4. 10% for cables and wires.

1) When designing or installing a Home Theater system, are DVI and/or HDMI cable runs always included in your plans?

2) For DVI and/or HDMI cable runs, what is the:
a) Typical cable length you use
b) Maximum cable length you have used successfully
c) Maximum cable length you really need
3) Do you need to pull DVI / HDMI cable through conduit? If Yes, is this a frequent requirement?

4) In your opinion, what percentage of the total system price should be set aside for all audio and video cabling?

1-They are now!
2a-5 to 6 meters
2b-6meters
2c-unlimited (wireless would be nice if bandwidth is available)
3-Yes, I wouldn't install it in walls or crawl spaces any other way.
4-Easily 30% depending on what type and amount of equipment. When doing in-wall installations can go as high as 50%

Contest entry

I am planning on buying a new system in the next few weeks.

Th Pre/Pro that I choose doesn't switch HDMI so I will go with DVI. I plan to keep the cables as short as I can. Pre/Pro and RPTV will be in same cabinet in pullable rack for equipment and pullable platform for TV so rough estimate is about 6 feet for the DVI cable. At this point cables are a second thought to my equipment purchase. Extra cash will go towards acoustic treatment for family room before expensive cables. I am not convinced yet about the benefits of different quality (specially expensive) cables.

DVI HDMI runs are always in my plans until I get a 1080p set and need diff cables.

Typicaly I use 2 meter runs and have only used 3 meters moving around things. I am setting up a HT in a year or so when I go into an addation to my house and would need the longest cable available for DVI, too keep equipemnt in a closet rack system.

I may need to pull via conduit but do not think I will

Total percentage for AV cables for the whole system, under 1k.

1) When designing or installing a Home Theater system, are DVI and/or HDMI cable runs always included in your plans? Yes, of course.

2) For DVI and/or HDMI cable runs, what is the:
a) Typical cable length you use. I need the following lengths in feet: 3, 3, 6 and 40.
b) Maximum cable length you have used successfully: 40ft.
c) Maximum cable length you really need: 40ft.

3) Do you need to pull DVI / HDMI cable through conduit? If Yes, is this a frequent requirement? No and No.

4) In your opinion, what percentage of the total system price should be set-aside for all audio and video cabling? Just to give a quick answer, maybe 10%. Too much is dependent upon the system and installation. Having my system at the back of the room requires several hundred feet of in-wall speaker cable and a 40 foot HDMI cable. Long lengths of HDMI/DVI cables require a quality cable to avoid sparkles. These cables alone would run over $350.00.

1) I'm currently finishing up my dedicated home theater and have considered DVI runs.

2a)I have a rear projection monitor so I'd be looking at about a 15ft run
2b)I have not used a DVI/HDMI cable to date
2c)I probably can get by with about 10ft, but like to have slack for easier maneuvering

3) I have not used conduit for any of my runs

4) I would say I spent between 10-12% of my total HT on cable

1) HDMI is now always included in my plans, but since my DLP sits on top of all the components it doesnt take much

2) For DVI and/or HDMI cable runs, what is the:

a) Typical cable length: 2-3m
b) Maximum cable length you have used: 3m
c) Maximum cable length you really need: 2m

3) Dont need to pull it through conduit, but if i was installing a front projector i would

4) around 10% for cables is reasonable, depending on total system cost and cable lengths needed.
