I'm playing back a Peter Gabriel DVD (The Videos) on a DTS compatible Sony DVD player through my Yamaha RX-V2600. The DD option works normally. The DTS 96/24 option requires a 30dB increase in volume to match the DD version!!
(My receiver's GUI shows this too when "signal info" is accessed, it shows a "diaglog normalization" requirement of -30dB).
Is this normal? Is the DVD defective? I don't have anymore 96/24 discs to compare too.
BTW, standard DTS discs play at normal volume levels. I think that the DVD player is OK but I might be wrong.
Any one have experience with this?
Thanks

Something is very wrong. If the receiver thinks the dialog normalization needs to be -30 dB then it thinks the DialNorm value in the bitstream is -1 dB. A waveform with an average level of -1 dB is a square wave and will sound like a low buzz!

The kicker is I think DialNorm only applies to Dolby Digital bitstreams. Maybe some setting is wrong somewhere causing the receiver to use the Dolby Digital decoder when the content is actually DTS 96/24.

It's definitely DTS

Thanks MDS,
The reciever is definitely reporting that it reads the DVD in DTS format.
On screen display shows DTS 96/24 and the reciever display confirms it.
This situation is only occurring with this one DVD but it's the only one I have in 96/24. All of my other discs with DTS option report and playback OK.
I'm thinking that I'll try to find another DTS 96/24 recording and try it out. There aren't very many....anyone know about another one?

any other titles?

You know, I noted the review of Gabriel's "Play" goes back to 2004.
And I'm looking now to see if there are other titles. If there are, then they aren't promoted because I'm not finding any. Is this hi-res format still being used? Is regular 48/24 the only thing being produced now?

I think Eagles - Hell Freezes Over is available in DTS 96/24.

I listen to a lot of concert DVDs. Some of them are just poorly mastered with no dynamic range. When this first happened I turn up the volume to make the sound more listenable, but then I just got loud with no dynamic range instead of softer with no dynamic range. An example would be Billy Joel Live At Yankee Stadium, turn it up and it still sounds crappy. On the other side of things there is Eagles Hell Freezes Over which is wonderfully recorded with great dynamic range. Clapton's One More Car One More Rider DVD is another example of great sound and dynamic range.

Fagen's "Morph the Cat" hirez package (includes a redbook CD and a DVD-A) has the album in DTS96/24. I think the Blue Man Group "Audio" DVD-A has DTS96/24 tracks, too.
