...from what I recall, Def Tech's were the greatest speakers there ever were, and what happened to those things...?
You have been on a roll buying speakers
That reminnds me, Sandy Gross' new creations may be right up DPS' alley, the Golden Ear Triton II. If they are anything like his old DT designs, they should have enough dynamic range not to embarass themselves while being generally easy on the ears. Should be easy to find a place to audition them.

Test Report: GoldenEar Technology Triton Two Tower Speakers | Sound and Vision Magazine

Great off axis response, on the sensitive side, uses the much ballyhoo'd ribbon tweet, d'appolito array (since DPS likes to obsess over these sorts of things).

Worthy of consideration?

If DenPureSound thinks the R900 sounds even slightly better - more detail, resolution, accuracy, etc., then that is the clear choice.

But we will have to wait until sometime in January when the dealer gets the R900. They already have the Q900 now.

With the grills on, you guys think the R900 looks much better than Q900? :D
I am more worried about the SQ of the R900 vs. the Q900, and if the price delta of $2200 more for the R900's are worth it or not -- to me that is the $64 Million dollar question. Both are still Monkey Coffin boxes just like the big boy Klipsch RF-7II's.

If the Q900's are 95% of the SQ of the R900's, then why would one spend another $2200 to chase that 5%?

That Triton Two also looks like an Excellent speaker with an Excellent speaker designer behind it in Sandy, and that is still in the queue as well.

Certainly worth a listen to, but pretty narrow at 7.5" width, looks like it might fall over to one side or the other when my drunken neighbor comes over and is banging on the front towers, but he only does that when I crank 'em up. :D.

How does that High-Velocity Folded Ribbon Tweeter (HVFR) in the Triton Two compare to the RAAL Tweeter (70-10d) in the Phil 3's?

Don't see any THD specs on it (KEF R900 is <0.4% at 90dB from 80-20kHz.) or no mention of Max. Output (KEF R900 is 115dB!).

5% seems completely insignificant.

But if you can hear the difference in sound quality of the midrange/highs at all, then it is significant.

My definition of "significant" is when you can actually hear the improvements.

So that is what you'll have to determine when you compare them at the dealer.

The question will be, "Can you actually hear the difference?"

Some bet you can, and some bet you cannot.

Only you will know when the time comes.

I've never heard them, so can't give first hand experience. You'll have to audition them yourself to find out. Regarding your drunkard neighbor, perhaps you should collect a security deposit before allowing him near your new audio rig.

I do own old DT super towers, and, as ADTG mentioned, they can crank quite loudly without falling apart. I imagine the Tritons behave similarly. I think they have a chance of hanging and banging with your Klipsch in the dynamics department, but probably sound a bit smoother. Also, the Tritons seem competitively priced for what they deliver, at least compared to similar DT offerings.

Right now I can't wait for PENG's impression of the Paradigm S8 & Focal 1028Be after he auditions them.:D

I wonder if his dealer is willing to let him take the S8 home for the weekend.:D

Agreed. That said based on measurements/knowledge alone I find it hard to believe anyone could not hear edgyness in the Q900's treble and the improved power handling of a true 3-way coax vs a 2.5-way coax...

WOW you guys really want to read into this way farther then needs to be read.

I have lots of people over to my house and things tend to get bumpin, and at times really loud.
Accusing of us of reading into things too much. Then bragging about the bumpin, and loud times. You'd think you were ungrateful that your opinion carries the weight of a monster thread. :p

In all seriousness you make a great point. If you are putting on a concert you don't bring Salks. If you are putting on a quiet evening with a bottle of wine you do. Every speakers is engineered for a different application.

The Salk's can pump, just not to Warpdrv's level. He has standards.:) Also, I think we all know how large his room is! Although, at our GTG the Salk's filled the room well. But for HT in that sized room - I wouldn't try it.

Local dealer just got 8 pairs of the Triton Two's in stock, so maybe soon will go and audition them. As far as the neighbor goes, he is buying all the juices next time, as he lays on the floor -- Bad Back Guy, LOL...

At least he can hear the dual subs that way...:)

No way near as close in measurements as the Q or R900's though. They only measure +1.14/-4.13dB from 200-10khz.

Suck out around 4.5kHz. where they are down around 4dB, and then they are way up there at 16kHz. around +5dB.

Geez, home theater gave them 5 Stars for Performance/Value/build quality, of course, all built in China.

And the journey continues.. Aperion VGT's = NO, next up Golden Ear Triton Two's, maybe some NHT Classic Fours (mfg. out of stock until Jan 2012), then onto KEF Q and R900 Series hopefully soon.

Sounds like PENG has been saving for a long time! Can't wait for Pengs writeup of his Audition. I would BET he will like the S8's (eh!) over the Frenchies.

I think your dealers in Wisconsin might be more trusting than ours in California. :)
My dealer was stuffing $10,000 amps in my trunk before he even knew my name and phone number. haha. I am lucky.

Looks like we may be turning DenPureSound into a regular speaker audition maniac. :D

Pretty soon he'll be writing up reviews on 20 speakers.

A lot of Paradigm stock holders are nervous right now. Their stocks may go way up or way down based on PENG's review.:D

Geez....the most I got was a $5K/pr of KEFs.

That dealer actually closed his doors this past year. :(

I have to be very careful, cschange might be following me around to another Audition...

Now, let's see you have auditioned about 18 speakers -- where is the synopsis of your auditions? :)

You have a lot of time and money on your hands there... please post the URL? :D

I thought the guy was crazy. He actually tried to send me out with a pair of MC1.2kw amps, $25k retail or something, with nothing written down, no CC, and he didn't know my phone number. I could've taken them and never come back and he would have never found me. To be fair, I had spent around $1500 on small stuff around the shop before that, but it was with cash and he had none of my info. I was only in there once. haha. I am surprised he hasn't been burned by being so trusting, but it is appreciated because I try anything he gets whenever I want with no pressure.

Same problem here -- and the SPL level is going up here soon with all the Xmas spirits. Wonder if my Klipsch's will fold up on themselves or Yell Out w/ the horns? No way Jose... they have never cracked an ounce and just love more of the first derivative with respect to time of the coulomb electric charge!
