BOULDER — A Longmont man accused of stealing more than $180,000 through a charity fraud was released from jail Thursday after a Boulder County judge reduced his bond amount.
Mark L. Schifter, 53, was arrested Feb. 26 after a grand jury indicted him on five charges, including theft of $20,000 or more, and violating raffle law by failing to get a charitable gaming license. The Colorado Attorney General’s Office is prosecuting the case in Boulder County.
Schifter was being held on $500,000 bond, but Boulder County Judge Gwyneth Whalen reduced that on Thursday to $10,000. Schifter was no longer in jail Thursday evening, according to a booking officer.
When Schifter was arrested, the Attorney General’s Office said he lived in Longmont and that Longmont Police helped investigate the case.
When defense attorney Steve Paulson argued on Thursday for the lower bond, he said Schifter owned property in Superior.
Schifter’s company, Perpetual Technologies, has a Louisville address.
Schifter is next scheduled to appear in court on April 13.
