Denon or Onkyo?

My 6.1 system now is: HK-340, Sony-550 Bluray, B&W HTM62 (center), B&W M1's (5) & B&W AS2 (sub). I'm considering either the Denon786 ($450) or the Onkyo602 ($375). Anybody?

I dont about the Denon but I hear the Onkyo has heat issues. You can also consider the Yamaha RX-V663

I'm going it myself very soon.

The 663 is a very nice unit, but if I had to choose between the Onkyo and the Denon, I would pick Denon all day.

^^ agreed. I've heard of too many issues with Onkyo/Integra. In reality, I'm sure this translates to a 1% failure rate, but that's too much imho.

everyone know Onkyo is better than Denon Why do you think I own Onkyo products. LOL. In reality go for the best deal. Either brand will work just fine.

Between those two, I would go with the Denon. There are two reasons for this. First, there have been reports at sites like this one that some have had reliability issues with their Onkyo receivers recently. Second, Onkyo does not include the original Dolby Pro Logic (DPL) on their audio video receivers, so they cannot properly decode DPL. Either one of those reasons would be enough for me to stay away from Onkyo receivers, so between the two, I would go with a Denon.

In fact, however, I went with Yamaha, which I think is a better value. Pioneer is another brand I would consider for its price/performance ratio.

It's a good reason, but the real reason you should have gotten the Z11 is because Yamaha > Denon

I was thinking that if I own a Bryston, I might be able to keep it for 20 years.

But who am I kidding?

There are just so many factors that go into buying components.

Everyone comes out to talk about problems but few come out to talk about the positives. I've had no issues for a month now and really love my receiver. Of course if it's kind enough to fail after warranty I guess i will just need a better one Can't pass up a reason to upgrade.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against them personally. They look like great products on paper and I'm sure there's thousands of happy customers, otherwise they'd be out of business. It just seems that the people with problem Onkyos/Integras are more vocal than most P.O.ed owners.

I simplest terms, it's the audible noise or hissing sound you hear, instead of the music.

This is my experience.

Acurus RL-11 preamp & 200X3 amp - suppose to have SNR of -95dBA. With just the amp on, no hissing sound. But when the RL-11 was on, I heard hissing sounds.

Denon PM2000 - suppose to have SNR of > 107dB. But I heard hissing sound.

Denon's very first Pre-Pro (before the AVP-A1) - suppose to have SNR of 100dB. But I heard A LOT of hissing sound from the surround speakers.

Denon AVR-5308CI - measured SNR per Home Theater Mag to be -110dB. No hissing sounds.

I've read that the Parasound P3 preamp also has hissing sounds, but the Model 2100 preamp does not have hissing sound. The 2100 preamp has better SNR per spec.

I heard that Emotiva is pretty quiet - no hissing sounds at all.

Do you hear any hissing on your speakers?

You know I like throwing out a bunch of numbers to look good.

Well, you know what the irony is?

The ultra-high end super expensive systems are only 2.0 for music (even SACD) and 5.1 for movies.

They don't even have TrueHD or DTS-HD MA!

When I actually get a much bigger room, I'll have to go back to 7.1.

First of all, I do come from Krypton, so I do have super hearing powers to discern these differences.

Second of all, excuse me, but the Denon DVD-3800BDCI has a SNR of -125dB per owners manual, and they are carved in stone.

Thirdly, those SNR numbers (-107dBA & -110dBA) come from Home Theater Magazine Website per HTM lab measurements.
