Hi. Ive had this receiver about 3 years now. When i listen to say pandora on main channel everything works fine. When i switch to Zone 2 (where i have my outside soeakers) it goes into overheat mode
(i guess) after 5 minutes of playing music. The power button starts blinking n I have to unplug it. Zone 2 runs with an amp. I bought fans for both the receiver n amp to cool them down, but apparently this was not the issue. I have the zone 2 speakers hooked up to a 4 channel speaker select n the amp connects into zone 2 on back of receiver. All wires r connected n fine. This just started happening out of nowhere. Seems to have happened around the same time i had a major issue doing an update. I had to reset n reassign everything. Im wondering if its something in the setup i missed? Tried calling denon. They said unplug zone 2 n replug it lol. Waste of a call. Jerry at denon is the best. Need him

What amp are you using?
What speakers are you using?
One test I would do is plug your outside amp/speakers into the main R & L channels to see if the problem is isolated to your Zone 2 or not.

There are two ways of connecting zone 2. If you are using an external amp it needs to be connected to the zone preouts. If it is connected that way then there is no way to account for what you are experiencing, unless something is inadvertently connected to the zone 2 speaker outs or their is a problem with the receiver amps connected to zone 2 May be you have a whisker from another speaker connection making a connection to a zone 2 speaker out.

You can only really account for this problem you have unless something is connected to a speaker zone 2 terminal that should not be or zone 2 power amp failure.

Look very carefully at your zone 2 speaker out terminals and make sure they is NOTHING connected to any of those four terminal posts.

If there is nothing connected to the terminals, then there is a problem with the zone 2 power amps, and one or other is drawing far too much current when activating zone 2 even though you are not using those amps. If that is the case your receiver needs service.

What is this speaker selector?

You could individually plug the speakers into a single main channel and see that all work without shutting the X2100 down. Put the amp in Pure Direct for this test or the one Kew suggested.

I like this one for being less labour intense. I don't like it because there's still the speaker selector in the chain.

I don't think that test will help unless the OP has everything wrongly connected.

Zone 2 is using an external amp and that is what is connected to the switcher. So the external amp should be connected to the zone 2 preouts. If the OP has done this correctly then there should be nothing connected to the zone 2 speaker terminals.

So nothing connected to the zone 2 pre outs should be able to overheat the receiver or shut it down. There is no way that even a total short of the zone 2 preouts would over heat the receiver.

When he uses zone 2 something is taking excessive current. This can only be from an inadvertent or stray connection to a zone speaker terminal or a defective internal zone 2 amp in the receiver that when activated is taking excessive current.

I misread that part. Thank you for catching it.

Ok ive been experimenting. Right now i have 2 sets of speakers on zone 2 for the outside. The speakers under the patio work fine and dont trip the receiver. The other set of speakers
(I believe they are niles. They are the $200 a piece rock speakers), they trip the receiver! The Russound x-75 amp is hooked up to the zone 2 left & right pre out. The speakers go to a speaker volume switch outside and from there they go to a niles speaker selctor switch.
The outside speaker wire is the CL3 direct burial wire. So do u think it could be the amp, receiver or speakers? And what do u suggest from here? Thanks again guys. I really appreciate the help. It's driving me nuts

How are the outside speakers you think are the Niles connected? Do you have an ohm meter?
If so, may need to do some resistance measuring. It seems that when you have the 2nd 2 speakers turned on your trouble begins.
Something is not wired properly.
And if that 2nd amp is connected through that pre out for zone 2 correctly per page 135 or 136 in the manual and some input on the amp for the zone 2 speakers, then there is no reason for the main receiver going into protection if that is what you are implying. Or, the amp driving zone 2 speakers is the oen going into protection.
If the latter, either there is a short someplace on that 2nd set of speakers or how it is connected to the volume controls. Or, speaker impedance is too low and exceeds switch capacity to handle.

Everything was working fine for 3 years up until 2 weeks ago. No wires were tampered with. The only thing that happened was that i had to do a factory reset because my receiver was stuck in the updating mode. All the electrical math was done properly i just don't remember the exact details being it was 3 years ago. I'll try hooking the two speakers to the main zone n see what happens.

EZ to troubleshoot..
Connect the non-working pair of loudspeakers to the amplifier output terminals on the Niles amplifier that is working...
What happens??
By swapping loudspeakers connections between working and non-working connections to the Niles amplifier, U can isolate if it is an amplifier or loudspeaker or wiring issue.
Another thing to check is.. Do U have volume controls installed?
If yes, and U have the levels set low this can/will burn out the volume control over time...

I hope that helps..

Just my $0.02... ;)

I want to get this quite clear. Do you have anything connected to the speaker terminals of zone 2? That is the crucial issue.

You mean that even if his outdoor speakers are properly wired through that zone 2 pre out but he has surround speakers also connected to the two speaker terminal that can also be considered zone 2 when zone 2 is selected, that the outdoor speakers and the two surrounds are attached and powered at the same time?

How does he square this that it worked for years before with the setup he has now?
Interesting.

It was a bad speaker wire. I guess the Arizona sun got to it. I really appreciate your help!!

Would you elaborate on this? Where exactly did it go bad? Was it exposed to the sun all the time or just under the eaves but the hot weather killed it. Did it short to the other wire or what? In the wire run or by a connection point?

Not seeing how you came to your conclusion and your internet threat isn't making you look much better than a doofus with too much time in the desert sun that didn't check his wires before wasting our time on the forums...

Just my take on it. You don't want poop, don't spread it :)

The other patio speakers just caused receiver to go into protection mode. So i gues it wasn't the nipped wire. The patio speakers go into a separate volume control switch. Something must be wrong internally with the zone 2. I cant think of anything else. Only thing connected to zone 2 is the amp. Is there a way i can bypass the amp n hook speakers up to the denon zone 2?
