Seriously, I have no life.
The other patio speakers just caused receiver to go into protection mode. So i gues it wasn't the nipped wire. The patio speakers go into a separate volume control switch. Something must be wrong internally with the zone 2. I cant think of anything else. Only thing connected to zone 2 is the amp. Is there a way i can bypass the amp n hook speakers up to the denon zone 2?
This whole story does not make sense. There is no way that speakers connected to an outboard amp connected to preouts is going to make the receiver overheat unless there is something you are not telling us.

Does the receiver overheat with zone 2 activated but nothing at all connected to any zone 2 output on the receiver? If it does then it is new receiver time.

The only other possibility, and it would not be the speakers, is if the outboard amp has failed on those channels and is sending DC to the receiver pre outs.

It is time for instruments unless there is something you have kept from us. I don't think we can help you any further since we are not there with our instruments and tool kit. If I were physically there with my kit, I'm pretty sure I would find the problem pronto. I can't do it from Benedict Lake Minnesota!

I do know this, that if you persists without the knowledge to understand what is going on you are going to do serious and probably terminal damage to your receiver or external amp and may be both.

You next step is to hire a competent professional.

My advice now is to call in a professional with the knowledge, tools and instruments to sort this out.
