Difficult to beat IMO.

For those with a smaller budget, the 4520's little brother X4000 is also great.

Just picked up a 4520ci yesterday and am looking forward to trying it out. Just setup my first new home theater setup in 10 to 15 years, so much had changed from my old gear. Went with a pretty basic setup using a 7.1 DefTech Pro Cinema 800 speaker set, a Marantz UD7007 blu ray player and a Marantz SR5008 AVR. Decided I wanted a little more flexibility than the 5008 and that is where the 4520 comes in.

I plan to add larger front speakers at some point like the Mythos ST series and move to a 9.2 setup using their built in subs and running everything but rear surround (seating/sofa against wall). Also planning to add a Sony 4k screen to replace our Sony 1080P in future.

I'm sure the Denon is overkill but the features like dual sub tuning and all assignable amps seemed really nice. Thanks for all the info in this thread.

Thanks. I had read that one. Was torn between sr7008, 4520ci and separates. Decided I wanted to try to make it as future proof as possible since my last receiver, Yamaha rxv795a made it for the last 15 years (no hdmi though).

The way I'm interpreting it, and I might be wrong, is the 4520ci would be the sister if Marantz made an 8 series receiver. It seems to be ahead of the sr7008 and as close to an 8801/8077 setup as you can get in an AVR. I'm just hopeful it has similar sound characteristics to the Marantz sr5008 that I tried first as I liked its sound.

The 4520ci and the 8801 share many internal component and almost the same feature set. The Denon has Denon Link HD which the Marantz does not. The Marantz has a toriodal power supply and HDAM circuits. You can find the 4520ci from authorized dealers for under $1750 if you know where to look.

No. I think the only player that has HD link is the 3313UDCI. A month or so ago Denon was running a special where if you purchased a 4520ci you got the 3313UDCI for free.

The Denon link is proprietary. It will only work with the Denon DBT-333UDCI Universal Audio Video Player.

None of the DSP modes appeal to me.

Sub EQ - good.
DSP - bad.

Just hooked the 4520 up. I have to say right off the bat it is crisper, cleaner and more dynamic than the sr5008 was while still retaining the similar warm to neutral feel. I need to run Audyssey tomorrow and see how it compares as I only did manual set up tonight. Overall I'm really pleased so far but will need to fully test it out over the coming days/weeks.

Like the results so far. Audyssey took a few tries to get good results.

Have a question though. Is there a product similar to the Marantz RX101 for Denon? I have this in a cabinet with solid door and could use a remote IR eye.

Hmm. I guess not. That MX port is not on any of the Denon's and there is nothing in their accessory list. You can use some generic Niles or Xantech IR receiver and then plug a mini plug into the IR input from the distribution block. I use RS-232 control so I had not seen that Marantz product before and did not use that port on my AV7005.

Hey ADTG, apparently S&V/HTM reviewed the 4520ci, did your copy in the mail yet? Not sure if it is true but reportedly the bench tests show outputs at 0.1% THD are about the same as the 3808/4308/4310/4311, that is around 230WX2 4 ohms, 120WX5 8 ohms. If true, that's pretty impressive in terms of consistency, despite the weight drop of 5 to 8 lbs, another proof that weight is a good indicator but only up to a point.
