Yes, that is a great price - but at what cost?!! I have a Denon 4802R and whereas it is still under warranty and have had no problems, I feel that on receivers, amps, etc., one should seriously consider an authorized dealer. I double checked Denon's website and they are not listed as an authorized etailer. I realize that one pays more at an authorized dealer but then you have a factory warranty!

No, I don't work for Denon! Just a poor underpaid, overworked government employee!! (now, don't go there!!!)

Here is Denon's official position:

WARNING TO VALUED CONSUMERS:
The warranty on DENON Electronics products is NOT VALID if the products have been purchased from an unauthorized dealer/on-line E-tailer or if the original factory serial number has been removed, defaced or replaced in any way. Recently DENON Electronics has become aware of numerous instances in which such serial number tampering has occurred. Unauthorized dealers/on-line E-tailers and/or their suppliers frequently alter the serial numbers in an effort to prevent manufacturers from tracing the supplier source. DENON Electronics sell products through authorized retail and on-line channels to insure that consumers obtain quality pre-sale and after-sale support and service. PROTECT YOUR WARRANTY. Buy from an authorized DENON Electronics dealer/E-tailer. Check the unit and its packaging to determine whether the factory serial number may have been altered. If in doubt, call DENON Electronics at (973) 396-0810.

Not ranting mind ya'! I have had friends who have purchased Denon products from the gray market, had problems, and guess what........Denon means what they say! Savings???!!!!!!

2nd ramblings!

I have priced shopped before and have gotten some pretty good deals. I "think" the point I am making is IF the product isn't too expensive, $300-500 or so, I would probably go on price. I wouldn't want to pay to have the unit repaired under warranty or have to replace it, but I can afford the price limit mentioned above.

I would not want to have buy a new 4802R, 5805 etc. due to the much higher price range!

Make cents?!! :)

What you say makes sense. I personally would probably take the chance, and maybe purchase a warranty from the individual vendor, if possible.
But, I'v repaired boatloads of audio gear in my past and could probably fix most problems, but that's me.

They offer a warranty, but it's not from Denon:
"ALL items are Brand New, Factory Sealed.
ALL items include all the manufacturer's supplied accessories and a USA warranty unless otherwise specified.
ALL items are First Quality, direct from one of our Certified Wholesalers and are EXACTLY the same as if you purchased them from your local department store. We are not authorized dealers for the products we carry, we are brokers connecting buyers and sellers together."

I have had very good service from them in the past.
Again, I can understand your concern with them not being a Denon authorized dealer.

What I want to know is how do these non authorized dealers get so much product and on the brand new models? Shouldn't Denon, Yamaha, et. all be keeping a tighter control on who buys their products at wholesale? Are they all hot? Can a dealer please explain this?

Thanks

My understanding is this:

The authorized dealer buys from Denon at a bulk discount. Maybe they buy 100 peices. They only need maybe 25 and they sell the other 75 to some unauthorized e-tailor. They might scratch off the serial number so they can't trace the supply route. Honestly, though, Denon as well as most distributers know this goes on and they don't do anything about it because they are moving high numbers of units. I think its a little bogus for companies to act self-righeous when they have to know this happens all the time.

Sorry for the bump, I was searching for reviews on this unit via google...

I would NOT purchase this piece from an unauthorized dealer. Try negotiating with an authorized dealer to reduce the price a bit or give you something free. Saving $500-1000 on a $6k piece this sophisticated and complex is not worth in IMO. You should also buy this product from a company that has good product knowledge and support. Denon is offering 9hr training courses to their dealers to learn how to properly operate it!

Just FYI, that denon is now $5500 on that site, instead of $4900.

Gene is spot on...

I bought all my Denon stuff from Tweeter... I originally bought a 3803 as a display model but it was a dud. It would crap out in 5 channel mode. They have a 30 day replacement policy for faulty merchandise. Since they didn't have any more 3803's left they had to give me a brand new 3805 no questions asked. They've got a great upgrade policy on ALL they're equipment and on several occasions they've given me huge discounts on cables, bi-wires, and even threw in a 3805 mic for free all because I frequent them. Can I do better pricewise online with these e-tailers? Sure, but I prefer the peace of mind to know that I can upgrade anything I have for a year, return anything that breaks and they'll take care of it. The amount of money I made on that 3805 upgrade (about $450) will cover alot of etailer discounts!

Personally I'd think I'd buy a used model off of E-bay before I get grey market. I'm thinkin' you'd be up the same creek if something really goes wrong, but on E-bay you would have paid ALOT less.

Would you buy a $1,500 warranty on a $4,500 piece?

That's really the question here, should one pays $1,500 [33%] extra for a warranty on an audio receiver that costs $4,500? Here's my 2 cents:

(1) If the receiver is so unreliable requiring $1,500 in "just-in-case" support cost, why is it being sold for $6,000!!!!!! There's a logical contradiction here.

(2) It's absolutely false to say that authorized dealers know what they're talking about, train their staff, or provide better service and this holds for both big chains as well as small so-called specialist audio shops. We often are relegated to poorly paid & poory trained sales rep who, through no fault of their own, are often clueless.

(3) No jury or judge would absolve Denon or any other from selling faulty products or from failure to police their own supply channel.

(4) It's illegal to artificially fix the price of goods. Publishers failed in court after court to force consumers to pay the same high price for books. Yes, that killed the small, cute bookshops, but gave consumers $millions in lower prices.

(5) Sooner or later, the channel with the lowest cost wins. If in doubt, ask Tower Records and Blockbuster.

Just in case, let me say it loud: I'm buying a Denon 5805.

I'm pretty sure all mfg's add in costs for future service issues. I find 33% quite rediculous - if in fact that's true. For that price, you should have a 10 yr 100% plus free s/h warranty. It would be a shame to pay even more for an extended warranty on that unit.

No chance their telling you the truth

I have a custom Installation business in the south. The AVR5805 is not available to all Denon dealers. Every dealer who wants to sell it must complete an 8 hr training course and pass a test on the product to sell them. I completed mine this week and we are the only company within 300 square miles who has. There is a minimum 60 day lead time on the product because Denon underestimated the volume they would do with it. It's hard for these "backdoor" guys to keep product because Denon does not want them to have it. I'll bet anything they can't get any 5805's because Denon is being overly cautious with who can sell them.
That said, I have touched one of these bad-boys and it is very impressive. I'll have to really think hard about a reason to sell seperates over it.

Let an authorized dealer explain how it works.
I buy either directly from the manufacturer or one of there distributors.
Some of the unauthorized dealers are really authorized dealers and in which case get the items from the same place, The problem is most manufacturers have internet ristrictions on there products and almost always a MAP price (min. advertised price) so to get by this the dealer will remove the serial # so it can not be traced back to them, in which case you are infact getting the same item just without the warranty. And some of the items are just plain knock-offs.
Hope this helps you out.

Don't forget to read the reviews about Amsound over at the AVSForum before making a purchase from this company. Sure, they have some great prices, but ...

Buy stuff with AMEX and sleep better. :)

I talked to Amsound, just now, and got a pretty decent response from them. I might actually give them a shot on my receiver here in a few weeks.
