Laptop Recommendation for an HTPC Setup

I’m looking for some advice on choosing a laptop that I can use as a home theater PC. My main goal is to connect it to my TV and AVR for streaming movies, music, and local media, preferably with support for 4K HDR and reliable HDMI audio passthrough.

I may also use Plex, Kodi, or similar media software and occasionally play some light games. I’d like something quiet, reliable, and powerful enough to handle these tasks without unnecessary hardware.

My budget is around $800–$1,200. Would you recommend a particular laptop for an HTPC setup, or is a dedicated streamer a better option?

Why does it have to be a laptop? Hard wiring is best for HTPCs. You may be better off with a streamer. It is hard to tell as we don't know how you intend to use it. I hardwire everything for HT.

I agree with Mark, a laptop is almost 100% of the time the wrong answer, unless you already own one or get one for free.
In either case, for a Plex server, the most important part is the CPU, and no, I'm not talking about 128 cores running 100 GHz, but what you need is the cheapest, but newest INTEL (Sorry, no AMDs as the video processing support isn't great) CPU that has built-in video processing. This is the key for Plex to easily and very efficiently transcode movies. One box with Intel N150 will be fine. 4 GB RAM should be plenty. Estimated about $300-400 tops

I highly recommend some flavor of Linux to run Plex on it; I use Ubuntu Server, since this is what I'm most comfortable with.

As for a client, I can't recommend Roku as they went the enshitified route. Nvidia Shield TV Pro is still good, but it's 7 years old design. I guess that leaves you with Apple TV 4K as your best bet.

I do a huge amount of streaming on my HTPCs and my DAW. There is so much good material available now from around the world. By and large the video and audio quality is superb. Just so easy with a laptop keyboard with radio connection. I fail to understand why anybody messes with those hunt and peck streamers. They only offer a fraction of what I can grab.

I have a long hdmi cord in my main system I can hook up to my laptop while I lounge on the sofa, but don't use it much, let alone as any kind of full time source. I already have sufficient disc players and streaming capability in the main system and I don't game....pc media I stream over my home wifi for the most part. If anything I'd consider something like BSA suggests, just don't have the need/desire.

In a home theatre you want something silent. I laptop transcoding video will get hot and have a lot of fan noise. There are very capable miniPCs available now that are nice and compact. Beelink has been making them for a while but Amazon seems to be flooded with various makes now. NVidia Shield TV may be old but still does the job. 4k, runs Plex and Kodi and streams all of the major providers. I still use mine almost daily.

I have a Beelink in our inwall system in the Great Room, it works fine, and my wife, who is the main user of that system has zero issues with it. The more I think about this, the more I think a laptop as an HTPC is a really bad plan.
