I just wish there was "proof" that pretty much all -- especially HDMI -- cables are created equal...
They are not all created equal. Some are sturdier than others, and some are prettier than others, usually with a view to selling to suckers who believe they are better in some mysterious way that impacts the sound. You see, most people don't even have a basic understanding of what is going on with electronics, and it is all "magic" to them. And so it is easy to sucker them into believing in some nonsensical magic or occult properties about some piece of equipment or other.

There is a tremendous amount of BS in audio, and if you don't educate yourself, you are going to have a difficult time not being a sucker.
One more thing: There is no shame in having made a few mistakes, but there is in never learning better. Think carefully and look at opposing points of view on things, and don't be too ready to believe anything, particularly if you want to believe it.
