Car/Homeowners Insurance

Seriously, I have no life.
Good to know. I do know from what my mother in law told me after their area got hail, that the folks that had State Farm were only given the option of partial roof replacements unless it was too poor to repair. All the folks that had USAA got a new roof significantly faster than the folks that used State farm. This is obviously just something she told me, but she's be very happy with USAA for a long time.

My brother got in a car accident and the guy that hit him had USAA. He contacted a lawyer and they wouldn't take the case as USAA apparently fights for their clients. Good if you're a member, not so much if you aren't.
Hail damage from roofs is always rated according to age. Newer roofs hardly ever have hail damage. So it is fair to rate for age. After all you don't get a new car if your 10 year old vehicle is a total loss.

I had hail damage to older roofs in Grand Forks and at Benedict Lake. I found State Farm's adjusting very fair. In neither case would I have expected insurance to pay for the total cost of roof replacement. However, you see people on line rant about not getting replacement cost for a 20 or more year old roof! That is just not realistic.

I'm not happy about insurance. Due to hurricane Ida my homeowners insurance went from $880->1500 /yr.

Good news though my auto insurance via State Farm dropped to $100/ mo on a 2021 Rav4. My wife is new car shopping. She was looking at Tesla. Crazy high insurance rates in LA. She was quoted over 350/ mo. Told her to go to Toyota can you can't go wrong.

Damn dude. Thanks a lot for that. That really helps me see what I might be getting into.

I should send you a six pack of this. Great local stout.

I’d take you up on that offer but it’s a milk stout and I can’t have dairy :(

I just went through a roof replacement with USAA and it was quick and painless.

I found a contractor on Feb 22 and got an inspection. Opened a claim with USAA the same day and scheduled an appointment with an adjuster for a week later. The appointment was delayed once due to inclement weather but whenever it happened, the adjuster agreed with the contractor’s findings and approved the replacement of the roof and repair of chimney siding. Initial check sent the next day. After the work was completed another check was sent for the recoverable depreciation.

The best way to mitigate HO increases is to have a home up to code, otherwise they nail ya.

In Fla the pickings are slim on Home Insurance. All we could get is: Citizens ( buts its a Fla only sate run company) .

Car insurance; Auto Owners. Never had a issue and I had two claims,

But all insurance is a rip off but ya got to have it, unless your home is paid for .

Cars don't be caught without it.
Florida has socialist insurance?!

I have been insured by State Farm for almost fifty years. I have found them to be very fair when I have had claims. Their agents seem to be well trained.

When we had a hail storm with damage to exterior light etc. the adjuster spent a long time on the roof.

He said that our almost new shingles were faulty, and already delaminating and needed replacement under warranty. I had other opinions and they all backed him up. So I started a claim against Tamko and his expert report was very helpful. State Farm settled the rest of the claim professionally.

On this new house, they did a careful inspection and gave significant discounts for added safety features, like the concrete construction.

So I can only speak from experience. I don't want to risk going to another company. If it was a lot cheaper I would be suspicious honestly.
I was suspicious in the 'If it sounds too good, it is" way, so I waited after receiving the first low quotes and looked into it further. I understand raising premiums because of high dollar outlay due to the ridiculously high number of cars stolen, but the insurance industry has the power to make changes in the auto industry and most of the safety features in cars are the result of that. If it's not the NTSB, it's the insurers, because they don't want to spend all of the money they take in. They could have stopped insuring Kia/Hyundai sooner and the data would have supported this.

I didn't like the way State Farm handled the theft of a car- I was clearly not their main interest and they were far from acting "like a good neighbor". .

Did they cover your hurricane damage without you needing to haggle and do the work for yourself? If so, look at what you got for the money, in light of the fact that many people lost far more and were paid far less. Was your damage from flooding, or the hurricane, itself? If it wasn't from flooding, consider yourself lucky- a friend lives in a 55+ mobile home park and his insurance company paid him $5000 because they pay for the hurricane damage, but he's in a bad Flood Zone. His out of pocket was about $35K and he did almost all of the repair work himself.

$1500/year in a place where hurricanes (and falling Iguanas) are common? Mine is almost $900/yr and all we get is rain/snow and trees falling over.

Nope, its the only insurance company that will insure in our county if you have a roof older than 15 years all because of the damage that occurred in Daytona Beach Shores by hurricane Nicole which is 19 miles from our home which is inland.. We had to get 2 roof inspections, by local roofers and a Federal inspector since the govt declared 4 counties ( St Johns, Flagler, Volusia, Putnam) in Fl disaster areas to inspect our concrete tile roof before we could get home owners insurance.

I've had USAA forever but it is definitely not cheap. I haven't had any issues with them however.

We have a very basic/entry level 21 year old home.

If you have been with one company for a long time, I would say it is not a bad idea to get quotes. I was with my first company, Farmers, for 14yrs and found they were charging me a lot more than other places for the same coverage. Though I never had any issues with them, I wasn't happy about overpaying and it isn't like they are a mom n pop company. I switched and saved something like $1500 a year.

I am not saying USAA isn't an OK company too, that experience was a particular office here and that isn't going to happen to everyone. They clearly were being shady to avoid an expensive lawsuit. First, they tried to get me to admit I was rushing to work or was distracted myself, which I was not, basically to minimize or eliminate their liability. Ultimately, I let my insurance handle it instead because of how they approached me, but based on that experience, I would not use USAA for my own insurance.

My only dealings with Farmers was pretty great actually. A guy hit me when I was turning into a parking lot. He got out of his truck and said "I'm so sorry, that was 100% my fault. I'll call my insurance right away." and gave me his info.

I got a call from Farmers the next morning, not even 12 hours later, and they were at my house taking pictures that afternoon. The agent cut me a check right then and there. It was more than my car was even worth and he just says "have a nice day" and left.

I may have to consider them after remembering that.

Farmers was really good as well, no issues with them when I had them. They had some features on their policy I liked better than AAA actually, but the rates are better for me with AAA so tradeoffs.

I have with Allstate for 20+ Years. I have a Legacy Home Owners Policy that has only a $500 deductible. What is even more amazing is that it has a vanishing deductible like my auto policy.
  • I had my 1st homeowners claim and had to replace entire 1st floor of hardwood ($28K)
  • My deductible out of pocket was $100 dollars I was in shock.
  • I have a 3k Sqr foot home so not huge, but I pay about $1300/yr. Allstate gives a discount if you pay it all up front.
  • Their auto plan pricing is not great. While I have accident forgiveness, and vanishing deductible, their prices went up about 30%
I have my umbrella/home and auto insurance policy with them. Though I swore I never do it, I did install the Milewise, not Drivewise device in my X5. I now pay only based on the miles I drive. (my speed, sudden breaking) is reported to me but supposedly not used for my renewal rates. I have a 250/500k liability with 0 comprehensive and pay about $600 every six months on a 21 BMW X5 M40i.

I could get cheaper auto, but no one can touch my home owners policy so I won't switch until they make me change it.

I shop every 5 years with 3 other Independent Insurance Agencies and give them a copy of existing coverage LESS the premium costs. I recently did this and staying with my current independent insurance agent. Independent agents know the total insurance business and usually represent those companies that are very reliable in your particular location and act fast, if there is an issue, etc.

It appears, where I am located, Insurance companies have pretty much the same premium for the same coverage, and boils down to customer service. Our current agent 5 years ago, had us sign up with Acuity Insurance, located in Wisconsin, where we live. You talk about service....4 years ago, we suffered hail damage and all was covered and received a check within a week, after the Independent adjuster submitted the claim.
His words were, "I have been trying to get my father to switch over to Acuity."

House/garage and 2 car insurances are $500.00 deductible along with million dollar rider policy. We are staying with Acuity as the other 2 agencies were much the same in premiums with different insurance companies.

Think about those home/car insurance companies that run TV ads, and have their own sub agent offices. Who pays for that? Then add to cost of higher price for a new or used car plus repair costs these days, along with inflation and you name it.

What are you willing to pay for your insurance coverage. Do you have to downgrade a bit? Review with your insurance company, get quotes, or visit an Independent Insurance Agent that will go to bat for you?
